my Greyhound was a bigger pain than any Weimeraner could ever be. She could jump and steal any morsel of food off the table or counter that she wanted and could run faster than you could catch her. Fixed her "bad" habit with a hamburger laced with Tabasco sauce. After that, she developed better manners around food.

Most people unfortunately will never know much about owning a greyhound. It is a singularly unique experience because of their backgrounds.

It is not possible to explain to someone what they might expect for instance, when they bring a dog home the first day who:

1. Has never seen another breed of dog
2. Has never seen his own reflection
3. Has never had a varied diet
4. Has never been up a flight of stairs
5. Has never been through a doorway
6. Has never been on a piece of furniture other than a crate ...
7. Has never been in for a ride, like you and I might have, in an automobile
8. Has never seen a cat or a small human being before ... let alone a squirrel, bird, snake, horse, etc.

Man the list not only goes on and on but so do the benefits of greymanship.

The king of our house, Whisper, he's almost 7 now, he can hear a piece of tin hitting porcelin from 1/2 mile. He spends the entire meal waiting for his portion, which he gets, because he enjoys it and we enjoy him and it will not hurt him.

When I got our Greyhound, she knew all those things and had already developed a lot of bad habits. Stealing food was only one of them. Stealing candy was her favorite. Never gave a care about the candy, but raw meat was definitely off of her approved list. She was a great dog in all other respects and I wouldn't hesitate to get another one. Problem is that we already have 3 dogs and there is no more room on the bed for a fourth. Trade you a Mini Dachshund for a Greyhound??? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't even go there. My wife sees something furry and with more than 2 legs, it's an instant battle.

Yesterday (hope she doesnt read this) we were at a grocer, got outta the truck and in the next vehicle was an italian greyhound. She went BONKERS. Insisted we wait for the owner to come out so she could hold it! Gad zooks.


I wouldn't be surprised if your grey didn't already have some time logged away from the track/kennel environs.

P.S. I haven't had a good nights sleep since 'Alice' was rescued. I used to own a 4 corner canopy. It's hers now.

Here is our grey hound which is a Weimeraner, Willie.
He is not very smart, did chew up everything, is very insecure, even sometimes wets while in his deep, deep sleep, only hunts box turtles (caught 10 last year), and is of course ir-replacable.
He is very materialistic as my daughter shows in this shot...

One of the Weimeraners I "adopted" after he was run out of town by the town officials because he loved garbage containers and cats. They were always strewn along the sidewalk where ever he walked. That is why they officially banned him from town or was he would be under a sentence of death. After I adopted him, I trained him to like cats in a different way. Got him to understand that it was OK to lick them, but not kill them. He and our cats got along fine....... they would fall asleep looking at each other and the first one to wake would pounce on the other. Made for an interesting relationship. His nose had quite a few scratches on it. He also loved porcupines. He killed 3 of them before he learned that they didn't make good eating. After the third, the vet suggested that I not bring him back the next time for quill removal.
The Greyhound was also an adopted pet and I was the third owner of her. She was very close to the Weimeraner and they always traveled together. Holly (Greyhound) would sleep next to and with her head on the Weimeraners (Blue) back. They were inseparable until Blue died. Now they are buried next to each other. Then we got the German Shorthair (Kelsey) and she and Holly eventually became close. In the beginning, Holly didn't like the addition of another dog in the house, and took Kelsey for a long walk into the woods and left her when she was a puppy. We found her after searching for hours and brought her back home. After that incident, Kelsey learned not to trust Holly by not following her into the woods too far. Eventually they became good friends and traveled the woods together. Kelsey is buried on the other side of Holly. Holly is flanked by her 2 best friends in life. I miss all the dogs and they always leave a large void in your heart when they die.... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

One word of precaution for anyone wanting to adopt a Greyhound (or otherwise live with any sighthound breed)....they are bred to hunt with their eyes and their speed, and they will chase anything that moves fast, and not pay regard to any roads or vehicles or anything else.

Most reputable Greyhound adoption groups will point this out to you....you need a well-fenced yard for them, for their own protection.

We have one acre inside of chain link for our hounds; when they exit the doggie door, they are inside this fence.

As DAP mentioned, there are many things a racing Greyhound has never seen. Funniest is to watch them learn stairs. They do adapt, however.
