Shut it down or let it idle?

I live in south central PA and I can't say I've seen those signs...can't say I've looked for them either. I have seen them in the Buffalo area of NYS.
Some trucks do idle at Tom's in Shrewsbury...seen that. So, that "No Idling over 10K GVWR" might be a regional thing or just not being enforced too well.

Take a look at any rest area PennDOT maintains or legally any truck stop as well as any trucking terminal.

I THINK that it's the fact that these folks see the 18 wheelers at the truck stops idling during lunch, so they think they have to leave these noisy things running all the time. I guess it makes them feel like Cannon Ball Jones or something.

I drove a semi for a long time OTR (over the road), and I can tell you that most of us didn't leave them run just to be "Super Truckers". The reasons most leave them running are:
1. If its cold or hot, and you turn it off, go inside for a few hrs to shower,shave, shine,and eat then what temp would you think that bunk is now? Would you turn your heat/air off in the house while your at work?
It's the same with sleeping in the Truck.

2. In the bitter winter months the constant vibration , and heat of the motor keeps the diesel from gelling, can you imagine 300 gallon doing that? Now they have those pony motors that run on gas, so that helps out.

Please understand its our home away from home,and we want it as comfortable as possible.

You missed my point. I was not questioning the truckers leavinig theirs running. I was speculating that the one ton, wannabe truckers, were copying the 18 wheeler guys in an attempt to look like Cannon Ball Jones.

Perhaps my genes are defective, but as I have gotten older I don't want to breath any more of it than I have to. Get some entertaining headaches after tailing poor running trucks etc.
