While mowing this weel I noticed that one of the rear hinges on my batwing mower was broke.. I could tell when i folded it as it sagged and tried to bind.

I figured I'd try out my brand new hobart stickmate AC 235 welder.

Jacked up, blocked and cribbed the mower, used a jack and prybar to get the wing in correct position. cleaned up the hinge with a 4" angle grinder, and set out to welding it up. Used a 1/2" pievce of cold rolled as filler at the crack. A few 6011 rods later and it was good to go with a little dressing from the grinder and some touch up paint after cooling.

Then i noticed a front flat.. A 10.00-16

Jacked and cribbed the front end.. got that monster off and headed to the tire store. Tires are getting wore down alot.. I need a new pair.. but none on hand. For now I got a boot installed and a new tube.. should hold air for a few months to get thru mowing season.. then i can replace the fronts as a pair in the winter.

Not sure if i should go back with tri ribs.. or those others that have more ribs.. like 4/5.. etc? ( comments? )

Got home.. reinstalled rim.. and wouldn't you know it.. i twisted a stud off. Drove out left over slug of stud... no spares on hand.. tire store didn't have any.. had to drive 45 minute trip 1-way to NH where I bought a bag of them... as i know I'll twist another off when i change tires later this year.

Finally got that all done and it has blown my day!

Now I gotta shower and head off to work!

Oh yeah.. in between me starting the tractor to manipulate the batwing and then moving for tire replacement.. I rat crawled up under the exhaust manifold and got stuck. When i parked tractor a little while ago I found it.. what's left of it.. cooked smelly rat.. yummy....

Some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you.

If you see lightening in the sky, stay INDOORS. Simply not your day.

I switched from tri-ribs to a Firestone "implement" tire on the front of my 2440 last summer. Not sure if it's just coincenental or not, but the new ones seem to be more susceptable to flats from thorns/nails/ect. I like the looks of tri-ribs too.

Pour some of the heavy duty slime type stuff in there, you will like it.
I have some very rotten tires on a utility trailer. they would not hold air for 4 hours, just too cracked up. I put $10 worth of slime in and they have run great for the last year. I haul lots of firewood offroad with it.

Anyone got pics of something like a multi rib ( 4-5 ) ribs in a 10.00-16 tire?

Advice?

Slime wouldn't have saved this failure, unless it can plug 1/2" holes.

Eventualyy.. I just gotta get new tires... There are wore down pretty thin..

SoundGuy I'm thinking that we all have days like that from time to time.

Yesterday I was helping another TBN member move soil. (a lot of soil)
I was loading it in his hydraulic dump trailer and he was transporting the spoils to a low area that was to be graded out.

Between trailer fills there was a couple of spots on his property that had piles of limbs, and other debris that I was grabbing with the grapple and relocating in his wooded area.

Everything was going as planned until the later part of the day when I noticed that I ripped both foward cylinder mounts off the grapple. Guess I was applying a bit to much hydraulic force on the grapple. So I quickly pulled all the grapple pins, dropped the grapple from the bucket and continued moving dirt.

Then within about an hour later the hinge on the trailer bed let go. At that point we shifted from moving dirt to the repair stage which also ended our day.

All in all it was still a pretty constructive day.

SoundGuy, Slime is a great idea in new (or other) front tires, tubes or tubeless. It may not plug a 1/2 inch hole but will last the life of the tire and stop leaks due to thorns and small punctures. If you want better, then have the front tires foamed and they won't go flat until they literally fall apart with use or age. It isn't cheap but the foamed tires are literally bulletproof and it isn't all that expensive for the fronts. I fainted when I got an estimate for the rear tires.

They have foam now that is not nearly as rough riding as in the early days and it still keeps the tires in service till they are just totally goners.
