Siding for pole barn

how expensive is vinyl siding? I know the price of the OSB but not the vinyl, wondering what would cost more per sheet, the OSB and vinyl siding, or metal? I know per sheet of metal is about 26.00 for what i want, a sheet of OSB is 15.00 but dont know about the vinyl?

Vinyl siding is sold by the square generally (100sq. feet ).
The price can vary quite a bit as there are so many different makes and qualities of siding . Do a web search on it and you'll get a pretty good idea . Mine will come from a local lumber company ( Lezzers ) as it'll match my house . You might want to figure Tyvek or simular house wrap into the price as well if you plan on heating your garage in the future.
It cuts down on air infiltration quite a bit .
If you haven't done vinyl before , you might want to see if Lowes , Home depot have one of those do it yourself classes available . It's not hard to do , but as with most things there are some do's and don'ts with it . I'm sure if you do a web search on vinyl siding you come across some tips on working with it . Not much of a direct answer . But I hope it helped a bit any way . All the best , John

the vynal is ok but can be damaged by mower debris or weed eaters bad. it will run generally form 18.00 to 50.00 per square. like others said price is dependant on many things for it. thickness type of lap, and grade (virgine vs recycled ect..)

I put T111 on my barn but it was just before that giant price hike, it took about 30 galls of good stain the first coat of paint. which was about 75 per 5 gal. I got a deal on one 5 gal bucket which was only 5 bucks! lol, it was mixed wrong and so I had them mix 4 more to fit and it was the color I wanted anyhow! (just lucked out) I painted mine in 2 days with one person helping to re-roll after I preessure sprayed it. You say it I think on the web.? it is 38 x 50 - 2 story. with a 10' lean to on one side. I will hopefully be able to get concrete in there this spring if it ever warms up and I et time to add some more fill & compact more. but it is going! lol

Vinal sideing---

Do use a vapor barrior
Do alow room for expansion
Do get a name brand with a warranty

Don't get a dark color (even darker gray)
Don't use it if exposed to high winds
Don't expect it to not fade

This is why I suggested hardbord sideing, if primed with a good oil base primer and installed properly it will last a long time-- I have learned to use 100% acrylic top coat paint it does last alot longer than vinal/acrylic

The problem with T1-11 is the trees its made out of are 2nd growth and it will check open alowing water to get behind the paint causing all the paint and longvitty problems-especially on the south faceing walls

But as far as wind , Crane makes a pretty much wind proof siding in Vinyl . It's not cheap , but it's very nice to work with as far as Vinyl goes . As to fading .... The Sun gets the best of most every product . Paint,vinyl, wood , Us /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif John

I would like to jump in here and interject my two cents worth. I believe vinyl siding is the most maintenance free solution to your barn that you can use. I also considered all the other options but spraying, painting, and staining does not appeal to me. I save all of that for the deck.

I also wanted a pole barn that would look aesthetically pleasing since it was within eyesight of the house. I matched my vinyl style and color that was used on my home and carried it over to finishing the pole barn. You may want to consider doing the same.
