the ammo boxes are 11 inches long, each by about 4 wide. They'll hold some decent size tools, but I don't usually carry tools for tractor repairs as I usually don't take the tractor too far from my workshop. I'm retired and not using the tractor commercially, so if it breaks, I can take the time to get what I need to fix it, there's no hurry. Chains, pins, clips, chainsaw stuff, gloves, etc will be what I use them for.

Great tip Pilgrim. I just throw stuff behind the seat. It stays there because i made a new seat pan so I didn't feel like I was "perched" on the tractor and the lowered seat tends to retain things but this is a superior option

Nice
I've been looking for a small tool box that I could use and couldn't find one so then I figured I would just have to make my own out of sheet metal but after seeing that i think I'll steel your idea.
Nice match on the paint also.

The use of the ammo cans is great! But even better is the fact that you have empty ammo cans on-hand. This leads me to believe that you are my kinda guy.

I have many that are empty, but even more that aren't. :)

Pilgrim,

I had considered .30 ammo boxes as well. I have tried to find one long box to use so I can carry a few more tools, etc. I will let everyone know if I find one. I admire how you mounted yours.

It is so nice to have the extra pins and clips you need right there with you. Nothing like looking behind you and seeing the bush hog pulling crooked.

I'm a licensed collector of firearms and have been so for a long time. I've never seen any box long enough to do what you want and narrow enough to fit there.

These are new old stock from the 80's but I have some from WWI thru VN era and none other than the 30cal./7.62 NATO would fit.

Perhaps a foreign size, but I have some foreign and they won't fit either.

Good luck.

Get a Quik Hitch of some sort and never bother with pins again. When in the woods logging, I'd lose two pins a day. Not anymore. Only took me close to 30 years to wise up.

pilgrim,

I misspoke. I should have written that I sought a long, thin toolbox. I had looked at a few true toolboxes that claimed to be of a dimension that would fit. They turned out to be too deep. Their stated measurements were incorrect when I received them.

Maybe just cut the ends out of 2 ammo cans and weld them together to make a log narrow one?:confused3:

I may try that myself- good project for the 110v wire welder while I recovery from surgery on my foot. :nurse: :bandaid:
