Single acting cylinder to JD 4520

The JD kit for 3rd SCV (LBV 25513) is $264 list.

Dealer service department is vague about cost of installation, by the hour it "could be as much as $800". Later they backed off to say they would put a ceiling on the installation cost.

I realize there is a fair amount of work involved, so my question is: does the range of $400 to $800 sound reasonable? I know the Green paint is expensive, but are the Green uniforms that expensive also?

With your username I assume you have some mechanical abilities...do the install yourself. It's not very hard and the instructions are OK.

Well, it was a lot easier in the '60's. Wrenches, timing light, tach and dewel, torque wrench, and one could work on most any vehicle. I'm not afraid to tackle a timing belt on a VW TDI (diesel), so I wondered about this job. The difference is I have a shop manual and specialty tools for the VW's, but not the JD.

It goes without saying, keep everything clean. Any contamination in the fluid system is bad. I'm also guessing one of the issues is to remove all the air from the system, and that is one of those things that if you do it the right way, no problems. Do it wrong, and there is a lot more work?

You did not specify OS or CAB model, so I will assume it is a OS (open station):

As I wrote before, you already have the valve-just no way to control it. You do not have to "open" the hydraulic system at all to install this kit. Look at the parts breakdown I attached below.

The JD technical manuals on CD are under $100, look HERE. They are VERY comprehensive and detailed. Use the money you would have spent on labor to buy one.

Thanks. Guess I need to update my profile. I haven't purchased anything off the JD site before because the navigation is not intuitive too me.

It is a 4520 OS purchased in 2007, and the last 6 digits in the Serial Number are 440xxx.

From that information I assume the correct manual would be under "Publications for Model '4520 COMPACT UTILITY TRACTOR BASE UNIT ('150101'-'650000')'."

I'm thinking the "Technical Manual - 4120, 4320, 4520, 4720 Compact Utility Tractors (Without Cab) TM2137" would be the item if I want paper.

Thanks again.

TM2137 seems to be the correct paper manual.

Do it yourself. :) I did it and found it to be pretty straight forward and, as Kennyd said, not a tough project. I am betting you will enjoy it.

As to Green uniforms...look at the training these guys/gals go through for the wide variety of controlled equipment sold by Deere now, and they do get expensive. Their spending a couple hours or more on your "easy" job, vs. working the tough computer/electronic problems out of a $250k combine costs the same for his/her Deere time. IMO. :)

Thanks guys. You have been a big help.

I have no desire to get into anyone else's rice bowl, I just don't want them getting into mine. After looking at the parts list I see what you mean, not a big enough job to justify the money they are asking.

The only thing that concerns me is the notation at the bottom of the LVB25513 Kit page "(A) Factory installed triple SCV only Reference DTAC solution 78478." I will verify there are plugged ports on the triple SCV before I order the Kit.

Since the service department mechanic said they would have to "stack" the SCV valve onto the existing valves, I'm assuming he was simply mistaken as to the configuration on the 4520 CUT.

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by incompetence.

Yes, I'd say he was mistaken too. Maybe a bit of a snow job to give him more allowable time.

But just in case, good to check out for sure that the SCV valve isn't already in the "stack". Parts dept should have that info as well, and the existing valve sketch for you to look at.
