single acting cylinders

i have some single acting cylinders off of my old case combine and i just built a back hoe attachment for my tractor can i use these cylinders and yes i have all the valves out of the combine i dont know much abought hydralics but think it might work ok but not the best please help me out thanks alot.

Since boom, dipper, & bucket curl would require 2 single acting cylinders each and associated plumbing it's doubtful that it would be worthwhile using even free parts. I have seen two single acting cylinders on the boom swing. MikeD74T

ok now i get it my neighbor is a machinist would he be able to add another port to my cylinders and make them double acting it would cost me nothing for his time thats why im wondering

You need room on the inside of rod end of the cylinder to hold the oil to push to retract the it. All the single acting cylinders I have seen the outside diameter of the rod is almost the same as the inside diameter of the body. No room for oil means no power to retract. Your friend would need to machine the rod way down to about 1/2 its origional diameter then also design a rod end seal to match the new diameter.

I seriously doubt that will work...the seals in most SA cylinders are not designed to have pressure against them in both directions.
