I am thinking of a home made skidder plate. One that I can put on a cat 1 hitch and mount an electric winch on it, (8000 lbs). Is 1/4 inch too thin how about 3/8, or should I go to 1/2"?
Any thoughts or plans are appreciated.

1/4 inch will most likely bend..I build one for a warn 8274 using 3/8s but i sold it before i had a chance to try it..I built it on the assumption that the heavy line pulls would be done with it sitting on the ground..However if you braced the underside with some c channel risk of tweaking would be minimized..also you gonna want something to dig into the ground to keep your tractor from rolling forward..I use the root rake set-up with a big peice of C channel and short bits of angle iron welded facing the ground side..Not sure if i ever did get a pic of it....
