I don't know why dullpain removed his post and question about what to do if you catch one in the trap, but anyway . . ..

Ya, was surprised to see it gone when I posted my answer.

Skunks living under a building is exactly what I am afraid has happened, we have a 16 X 20 out building a skunk can very easily get under. Although our two cats hang out under it quite a bit during the day and they have never been molested. We do bring the cats in at night so maybe they have just been lucky.

Trap goes out tonight, Pat said the skunk was pretty small so momma may be around someplace.

Thanks for the tip on Natures Skunk remover, Pat found it at the local Petco and bought 8 bottles. She also picked up more peroxide and baking soda, I went to Attwoods and bought a big wash tub.. We should be fairly prepaired if it happens again.

My little Jack Russell found her a skunk under my 12X20 shed several months ago, I knew she wasn't going to let it go so I assisted her in removal. I dug her a access hole to get into so she could get her a good spraying...and she did... several times.
It just made her mad and she wanted revenge so after I was able to place a piece of lead in the correct spot she had her a ball dragging him/her out of there and thrashing it about, I took pictures but they came out blurry.
I then gave her a tomato bath and all but her head came out just fine.
I know she will jump into another skunk given the opportunity.

Many years ago, we lived in a house a few hundred yards from the beach. It was great, come home from work and head to the beach for salmon fishing. Usually home in an hour with a couple fish.

One night as it neared bedtime, I let the dog out for her last potty break. As she came back in and I gave her a little pat on the head. I felt somthing sticky and gave it a little sniff...and just about barfed. 2300 at night and the dog needs a bath...not very happy about that. The next morning, I let the dog out and she made a beeline for a spot in the yard. She looked like she was gonna roll and I hollered at her. There lay a large salmon carcas several weeks old. Not sure what drug it up in the yard but my pooch sure thought it made for an excellent cologne. What is it with dogs and "strong" odors?

This past spring we decided to get some chickens. When I built the coop and run I buried chicken wire about a foot down so that no skunks, rats, coons, etc could make a home under the coop. I used the single bottom plow on the tractor to dig the trench and it worked great. Anyways when the chicks were 4 weeks old out they go along with 2 leg hold traps and a live trap that I borrowed from my dad. Since the end of June I've caught 9 skunks, 1 racoon, and 2 'possums. I think 5 of the skunks were in the leg traps, one of them stuck his head in the trap after a chicken bone and was killed instantly. The others I shot with a .22 from about 30 feet. If you are going to shoot them do it from a distance. If you don't have a killing shot they will spray!! The ones that got into the live trap were actually the easiest to deal with. My dad had made a box with a garden hose connection at the bottom and sealed it up with silicone. When I found Mr or Mrs Stinky in the trap I'd hook up the house to the box, do it AWAY from the house, and turn the water on. Use a piece of black plastic large enough so that you can hold it in front of you and walk SLOWLY up to the trap and lay it over the trap once you get to it so that the 2 big sides and top are covered. You'll need to make a small slit in the plastic so you can grap the handle of the trap when you cover it. Slowly pick up the trap and carry it to the box. By now the box should be full and just drop the trap in it, go inside and drink some coffee for 15 minutes or so. The water that is in the box will get some smell to it, that's why I suggest doing it away from the house!! I take the carcass over to a wet area of my property and dig a hole with the FEL and drop it in then cover it up.

Good luck!

Like the water idea but shooting him would be more fun.. Set a trap out lastnight and came up empty, thinking that is a good thing because it means I don't have anything living under the building. Going to move the trap closer to the un-kept property next door and see what it attracts..

Funny, this morning the wife let the cats out before I put the trap up and sure enough one of our cats found it.. At least I know it works :)

BobReeves - good thing you were not using legholds. The kittys owner probably would not have been happy.

Ya, the one that was in the trap is my buddy, she is a character, just a year old and really enjoys her existence. Not afraid of anything, hangs out with me in the shop and my power tools don't bother her at all. She has done a good job on the mice population and it would break my heart if anything happened to her.

Bob I'm not sure you should give up on an area after one night. I was getting one a week usually on a Tuesday. Then one week I got 3 in 5 days. I'm not sure I could ever think shooting skunks would be fun but part of the reason I don't shoot them in a live trap is that there is a good chance of hitting the trap. If it was my trap I might reconsider it. I also can't use anything larger than a .22. Our house on the edge of the village. The neighbors don't notice one shot at 6AM from that gun, they might say something if I pulled out anything larger.

A woman at our church has a live trap that skunks fit in quite nicely, but too tight to spray. She catches skunks that go under the pastor's house, then sinks the trap in her pond to drown the skunk. Never been sprayed--yet.

Another woman was following her brother down the road. He swerved to avoid a skunk & rolled his car. She stopped to assist, not knowing why he swerved & rolled, and you guessed it, she got sprayed.

These stories got me to worrying about my barn. 2" gap, maybe more, under the doors. I better put some wire under there.

I was gonna say Bob,
I heard the live traps need to be the right size so the skunk can't lift it's tail to spray. I don't have any personal experience with that though.
