when I had a skunk in the trap, I'd call the animal control office

Did you ever have a problem with catching animals other than the skunks you were after? I've got a couple of skunks around and have considered doing the same thing you're talking about. But I'm not sure how to avoid catching other critters (rabbits, raccoons, possums, the neighbor's cats). Just let 'em go if you get them?

Chris, I would think there could be a good chance of catching other critters, and of course you could just turn them loose if you wanted to, but in my case, nothing ever got in the trap except skunks. We were in town and I guess there just weren't any other critters running around loose in the area at that time.

No. But but that could happen I'm sure. I'd guess you'd hear quite a commotion if you did get a cat trapped. The thing to do I suppose would be to check the traps regularly.

When I was 7 years old, we had a skunk population explosion. My Dad knew that you could pick up a skunk by the tail, and wouldn't get sprayed because the skunk need purchase with his feet to activate the proper muscles. We'd run one down with a flashlight and gunny sack. He'd grab the skunk, I'd hold the bag. Later on we'd dispatch and skin the critter. It brought in a few extra dollars to help with our growing family bills. It worked nearly all fall, then one dirty skunk, grabbed the bag. The rest is history, gone but not forgotten. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Thanks Bird, B7500.... I kind of guessed that would be the case. Maybe I'll try the trap one of these days - but I don't think I have the guts to try Slamfire's technique /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif! Wouldn't have thought that possible, and am definately not ready to try it myself... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yep, like Slamfire, I always heard you could pick up a skunk by the tail and he couldn't spray unless he was able to brace his hind feet on something. I've never been tempted to do any personal experimenting along those lines though. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The thing that amazed me the most was just how fast my loving grandmother, and mother turned into firebreathing witches. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I was alway taught that you washed it in tomato juice to get rid of the smell. Certainly worked the few times we had to rise the dog.

The funniest story I know is our former pastors. Some one had built drawers into the eves of the second story of his house. One set was used in the master bed room. One day he reached for his socks and felt something warm and furry. Startled he jump back and slammed the drawer. The skunk let fly. Naturally all his cloths were aromatic.
The next few weeks were trouble getting the skunks out of the eves and patching the screens etc. Lots of Tomato juice used here.

I think his wife was near the end of her patence by the end.
