Sleep habits, mine are a disaster. How 'bout you?

I've worked 12 hour rotating shifts for 31 years now. I can't sleep over about 5 hours when I'm working nights, no matter how dark I get the bedroom. Can do a little better when I'm working days, maybe 6 hours. I get up at 3:45AM and usually in bed by 9:15PM. Working nights I usually can get in bed before 7AM and up by 12PM. I have a Tempurpedic mattress and like it but it's probably not worth what it costs.

I take my hat off to all of you who work true shifts. I have a day and an afternoon shift (day is 8am to 4pm, aft is 2pm to 10pm) and could not do the overnight thing. Amazing what people can do when they put their mind to it.

Years ago I worked a different shift every month...day shift was 7 to 3 PM and 2nd shift was 3PM to ll PM and then the night shift was 11PM to 7 AM --- I had no problem on the night shift....I would get off at 7 AM and go home, eat breakfast and unwind and go to sleep about 10AM....until about 5PM...the worse shift was 3PM to 11PM ...it really messed the day up...I could not do much in the mornings because I had to be ready for work by 2PM...and then home at 11:30PM ...it was bed time....Day shift was the best....

I worked 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the Post Office with a 30 minute lunch break for a couple of years. And one year, I'd get off at 6 a.m., then go drive a school bus, go home, get to bed, then get up in the afternoon and drive the evening school bus run. And then for about the first 3 years on the Police Department, I worked 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. two months, then 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. one month; just back and forth those two shifts. I used to prefer the overnight shift because it was cooler at night and less traffic on the streets.

I'm not sure I could do that anymore.
