I just installed a Eurocardan Slip Clutch from Agri-Supply to my Woods BB60 Brush Hog.With it has come a new noise that I can't figure out.My question is should the slip clutch be making any noise? It sounds like something rubbing. The gear box is rated at 50hp. and my DK35 has a PTO rating of 28 hp.With no manuel how do I know the spring tension is set for my tractor and mower. The guy I ordered it from said to just put it on.Could it be that the plates are slipping,I have not hit anything with it and it started making noise from the get go. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The clutch should not be making any noise. Have you done an internet search for the mfg to see if they have a site and can supply you with info?

I found their site. You might want to send them an e-mail for directions on how to set up the clutch.

I have had no luck finding anything on this clutch.I think someone else tried also on an earlier post on this board. The one good thing about the Woods BB60 is how quiet it runs so this new noise I have was easy to pick up.I'm assuming it's coming from the new clutch, as it was quiet before I added it.

I would guesss that if there is noise comming from it.. that it is slipping... you need to address this before you burn your plates up.

Are you sure your PTO shaft is not too long now? (did ya check it after installing the clutch?)

Take the clutch off and see if the noise goes away...

Well I decided to take the slip clutch off and see if it was the problem with the noise I here(and yes I shortened the PTO halves). With it off I noticed the noise went away.So before I put the clutch back on I took a marker and drew a line across the plates, put it back on and ran it a couple of minutes at about 2200 RPM.When I shut it off the line had shifted on the plates one of them about a half inch. This would seem to show that the plates are moving under normal use.I'll either have to get in touch with EuroCardan(they don't seem to have an e-mail,just a place on there web site for suggestions)or try tightening up the springs a little.

YIKES... Don't do that...! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Some slippage will be normal... the noise is minor... when you adjust the spring height (8 springs total)... just changing the ht. by a mere .5 mm... you will greatly change the nm characteristics...

What kind of noise is it? If the clutch plates were constantly slipping... you would see SMOKE!... and then FIRE... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Really... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif If anything, see if you can swap it out with another assembly... but the entire assembly is only about 6 or 7 pieces... (but don't adjust it, just for the sake of adjusting it... or you may dig yourself a deeper hole... )

I just got my Woods BB60CW today. It has the optional slip clutch and chain guards.

It runs real smooth and quiet to my ears. Now I may not have the best hearing...but it sure made no more noise than my Woods RD6000 RFM did...until, that is, I starting cutting with it... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Not sure what help this is. I did notice in the manual that Woods indicates that their slip clutch is a dual disk. IF I remember correctly. Not sure what differenct that might make either...

The clutch is a 1 3/8 smooth male/female.I haven't made any adjustments to it,I guess I'll just leave it the way it is then. This thing ran super quiet though till I put the slip clutch on.

Also the noise is more pronounced while mowing.I guess if somethings not right it will show up one way or another.I suppose as John says it would be smoking if it was slipping that bad.

Just by feeling the gear box you may be able to tell by the temperature if the clutch is slipping.

Hi Rick--With the round to round configuration, There is a 1/2 X 3 1/2 inch grade 8 bolt the retains the clutch to the Brush Hog gearbox and also the same size bolt that holds the PTO to the clutch. Maybe you have a smaller diameter bolt in one or both of these places and have some lost motion in the connection? This would most likley create low pitch vibration sound----Check it out--Ken Sweet

Henro,

I have the same cutter and slip clutch. On mine the slip clutch was over tightened or frozen at time of deliverly. The manual states to check it when new and the start of each season. You should check yours it out or you might have the same supprise I had the first time I hit something. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif This was something I would have expected my dealer to do at time of setup but when I questioned the dealer, I got a blank look. I have since serviced the clutch and it now works fine. PS hows the chains? I have some on order.

Ken it's funny you should mention that. That was the first thing I thought. When I put the slip clutch on the first time I noticed that the 2 grade 8 bolts that came with it,neither one seemed to be quite a 1/2 inch in dia. There was a lot of play in the yoke and clutch on the output shaft. So I went to the local hardware store and picked up a 1/2 x3 grade 8 for the back hole and a grade 5 for the front hole where the yoke attaches just in case somethings not right I have a little bit softer bolt to break.

Re: Slip Clutch-2 plate-spring adjustments for 28 PTO hp

( my DK35 has a PTO rating of 28 hp.With no manuel how do I know the spring tension )

Using a digital caliper, get a spring height reference... check a couple springs for an average (write down this number and save it in your records)

I'm assuming a spring thickness of 6 mm (most popular used out of 3 sizes)... (numbers are rounded off)

Using a 28 PTO hp tractor =3224 in/lbs.=364 nm (average)
5504 in/lbs=621 nm (peak/clipping) <----You want around here.

2-plate slip clutch with 6mm springs-
Slip clutch adjustments=spring height (all 8)
4800 in/lbs.=540 nm=29 mm
6000 in/lbs.=680 nm=28.5 mm

Your average spring ht. should be around 28.75 mm for your 28 PTO hp tractor for average torque limiting...

Re: Slip Clutch-2 plate-spring adjustments for 28 PTO hp

Thanks John.I'm still trying to figure why I'm hearing the metal rubbing sound with the clutch on.If it's just parked and running I don't here it.It's when I start mowing I'll pick up the noise so it's hard to tell exactly where it's coming from.

Re: Slip Clutch-2 plate-spring adjustments for 28 PTO hp

I'd just take it back or send it back. Tell them it's not right and you don't know why. You didn't fool with it, but do expect it to work and protect you and your machine. Any problem with the return and they become liable for you and your machine. Just get it in writing. This is a malfunctioning piece of safety equipment. Get one that works. You paid for a good one. bw
