Slow Down, Move Over Video-It's the LAW!

When I was done with my initial exchange, I started to proceed, as the lane was clear. He screamed at me to STOP the truck. He had never conveyed his wishes. More then once, I get the impression that cops expect us to read minds!

I shut off the truck and waited as a long line of traffic piled up behind. I had to wonder. Do they purposely hire these geniuses, or do they all have to undergo some kind of treatment after the fact to dumb them all down?

The nicest and smartest cop, I ever met, was tragically killed around 2000 in a bizzarre single vehicle crash. Every cop I have dealt with since or heard about, just leave a lot to be desired. And for what it's worth, My Grandfather was a cop.

And as for those lights. Having a sandblasted windshield with 100K on it plus salt deposits from the brine they dump on the road, doesn't go well with those strobes. But hey, it's not my neck! I just tried to tell hem.

If and when I am stopped on a busy road I want every advantage possible for safety. However if my safety lights that I thought were keeping me and others safe were blinding people from seeing me or others trying to help I would definitely want to know. It's scary enough trying not to get hit as it is without thinking you just blinded everyone coming at you.
I do my very best to be cautious and courteous and give every courtesy to those helping someone on the side of the road because I've been there. But I got to say some of those lights are bright as heck and make it very difficult to see for sure. Definitely wish there was better options and more awareness to increase safety. This seems like an area where a bad attitude would definitely not be beneficial.

You can have BRIGHT lights DIM lights flashing it does NOT matter. Some Stupid Fugging idiot drivers don,t care they have a plan get there ASAP and get the h-ll out of my way.Worked along about every roadway possible as a electric lineman for 38 plus years.Love to have you as my flagmen late at night directing traffic don"t forget your yellow florescent vest, that ought to slow them down.Laffin..

I think you should consider getting off the roads... If you are among the small percentage of people that can't get onboard with the concept.

Those people with bright lights are working. Their "office" is wherever they happen to be stuck on a scene at that moment.

That has nothing at all to do with lights blinding oncoming drivers.

I think you should consider a reading comprehension class.

If the lights are too offensive for your overly sensitive eyes... Maybe you should only drive during the day, or maybe not at all. Leave the roads open to the rest of us who have the common sense, and common decency, to thank the police and other emergency workers for risking their lives, and support giving them every advantage they can get to return home safely after their shift.

Again, their safety is more important than your convenience. Sorry if you are offended... You should blame it on Russia LOL

Those people with bright lights are working. Their "office" is wherever they happen to be stuck on a scene at that moment. Their jobs are to protect us all (everyone, all walks of life and intelligence levels) and then clean up the messes when we do stupid things. (Not an easy job considering how many stupid people are out there). You might not like emergency workers (seems like you have a lack of respect for them anyhow) and you may not like the laws... But you probably wouldn't want anybody driving thru your cubicle, or buzzing your tower wherever you park your butt while on the clock either.

Their safety is more important than your convenience. You're not that special...

Not attacking you personally... This is how we all should look at it.
interesting how two people can read the same post but come away with a different perspective. I've been in the same situation where the lights are so bright and aimed right at on coming traffic so that it was extremely hard to see the person directing traffic. Personally I just creep by regardless of the idiot 2" from my rear bumper.

I don't particularly care what others think of my intelligence, I will continue doing what I do with regards to police, ambulance and fire fighters. I have been doing that since way before any slow down and move over law came into being. I always slow down and move over in situations like these. You never know when a FF, cop or medical person will dart out in front of you before looking both ways. Tow truck drivers included.

Odd. So, you don't hate or despise emergency personnel, yet you can recognize that sometimes their lights cause problems?

Weird. Really weird.

I have several times been at a nighttime incident scene on the road where the use of ALL the emergency lighting on EVERY responder vehicle has made it difficult to see well. Even with relatively clean glass. This is especially true for high-energy strobes. The exception is the downward aimed floodlights often found on fire trucks.

It is insane how bright some of the lights can get. Sometimes that's all you can see it's binding. Not sure why they think brighter is necessarily safer if you're blinded by the intensity of the safety lights.

Agree. Some of the lights are so bright at night that you can't see the Trooper standing next to the car or out in the middle of the road trying to direct traffic. Lights need to be directed downward so they don't shine directly into your eyes. The LEDs are worse than the older style lamps.

Some of the led lights are harder on the eyes than others. Most agencies buy supplies based on price not quality.
as with any profession some are better than others. I have worked with many great as well as some terrible officers
In my area we have special deputies, they take a course on safety, pay $100 and they get a uniform and badge. They are used to direct traffic for special events or construction. Typically they do bad job and think they are god's gift to the motorist

Well it finally happened to me tonight. Responding to a box alarm for smoke in a building. 15 year old girl driving on a permit went left instead of right. I went back to check on vehicle occupants and the dad wants to cuss me. Now I get to go to romper room court.

What happened?

Improper yield to an emergency vehicle. Unfortunately, even though they train ad-nauseum in EVOC to expect the unexpected, you just can't predict stupidity or panic. Was this in a POV or Apparatus?

Here's a fresh one from CT. You cannot tell me that this driver was not talking or texting. Trooper was first of two with lights activated. Trooper was in the car and was shoved 80 feet.

Wow, that is quite the bang-up! I bet the trooper has serious whiplash from that. The patrol car kind of looks like an AMC Gremlin now. Too many distracted drivers out there for my taste.

Same answer given as for 'Why were you going so fast?'

"I didn't see you."

People seem to drive as though they don't have to pay attention, that anyone on the road is in their way, and that only others will make mistakes and get ticketed.

The impact wasn't bad. It was raining and the truck fishtailed. Thought it was going to roll over on the third time. Got it stopped and asked if everyone was ok. Nothing but silence
