And for the record, yes the military issues ONE weapon per person (not counting crew served weapons, ie. heavy machine guns and mortor's). M16/M4 carbine (depending on the type unit) for enlisted and a M9 Baretta for the brass.
Thanks! :)

I'll second Diesel's advice. I'm partial to the Sig Sauer's. I have a full size P-226 9mm and a compact P-230 .380 I really like the feel and reliability. The de-cocker is also a nice feature.

I owned a Glock .40 cal at one time. Nice gun too, but they have a slightly different angle between the barrel and the grip that I couldn't get used to. (Just grab an unloaded one, close your eyes and point it at a target. Open your eyes and see where you "naturally" pointed it. For me, I always pointed it high.)

Sigs are great guns, very reliable and well made. Just keep in mind, some people do not like the double action pull on the first shot and single action thereafter (been a while since I bought one, perhaps some models/actions have changed).

H&K makes some nice solid reliable handguns, along with Kimber. Personally like the grips and "weight and feel" on a 1911 style pistol over a Glock, but have a Glock as well, and it's one of those few guns that you could take in the woods for years, never clean, get it dirty, shoot any type of ammo, and chances are, you'll never have a misfeed.

You mentioned that girlfriend and child may shoot the gun as well. Keep in mind, only my opinion, there is always a tradeoff between caliber and pistol size/weight. Smaller/lighter the gun, more recoil. Can make shooting non-fun for beginners and not want to shoot.

I will miss Jeff Coopers controversial writings---he was one of the last "True Great Men"

I think in Coopers later years his writings were more "off his his rocker" than controversial.

That said, he had the history to get away with it.

Hi Joe, its about time you popped in on this thread. I currently have a couple .22 pistols that are easy starter guns for when my daughter is old enough. I know my 21 is a little large for most women to hold comfortably which makes shooting it kind of hard. It might be a case where I get one that fits me and another for the little ladies in a smaller size/caliber. It will be a few months before I look hard at buying so I am just researching right now.

Have you considered a Glock .22 conversion kit to have others "get used" to shooting the Glock? Just a thought.

Now depending on how much you would want to spend, you could also send the Glock out to get some grip work done (to reduce the grips size). Love my G20 but I have real small hands. Shooting some bigger loads for deer, well, honestly, never loved the Glock like some of my other pistols. Sent the gun out to Robar in Arizona, and with reducing the size on the grip, it really has become one of my favorite shooters (and a big difference personally with managing the "snap" of the 10mm larger loads with grips that fit my hand better).

I did not know there was a conversion setup for the Glock. Anyway, I am not all hung up on them so that if my daughter wanted a pistol to carry when she is older she can get what ever she is comfortable with. My daughter is only 2 but I do plan on getting her into shooting as soon as possible. So it will be quite a few years before she will be able to have her own gun. My girlfriend lives in the country also and has a lot of wildlife coming around her place so she is always worried about something harming her pets. I doubt there is one pistol that will work for everyone but I do like to try and keep things similar (which is why I run CNH equipment, I can get parts from one dealer).

I am going to look at some of the other guns mentioned in this thread though and see how I like them. I would love to get a small .22 for my daughter also but I think she will be happy to start out with the .22 rifle in a year or so. Right now she loves to go out and check the trap lines. Our friend traps our property so we go check on the traps for him first thing in the morning and she loves to go. Caught a nice big mink yesterday and Ava had to pet it as well as the racoon and rabbit :) Our friends daughter comes out with him also when she doesn't have school and helps with the traps. I just can't wait till Ava is ready to start shooting as I think she will have a lot of fun as she already has a great eye.

Think you're getting her started early enough there, Butch? I thought first grade was getting an early start....what are we talking here? Pre-pre-kindergarten?
