Good insite Eddie. In his case, what would you suggest for the overflow?

Here in Arkansas, the AG extension service requires that when building a pond to their spec. that an overflow is put on the upper end of the pond. NO PIPES allowed as Eddie mentioned, they can never be sized appropriately to deal with flood conditions. Here they cut a wide trench at the upper end on one side of the dam and line it with large rocks to prevent erosion. This allows for constant run off of heavy flood rains to go around the sides of the pond and not over the dam.

I started digging into the ground and discovered that water is running underground below the big trees roots. I got about 10' from the giant poplar and dug down about 5' below ground and found a stream. What now? If I block the stream off now it will turn into a swamp. Should I just wait til a drought?

Began dropping the big timber yesterday. I am bringing in a D6 next week to drag out the trees and form up the dam.

D6 is a pretty heavy machine. How far down is the table water and who is going to be operating the dozer? Messing around with mud and a dozer is a good combination to getting stuck. You don't want to try and get something that heavy unstuck!!!

What is the plan on getting those stumps out of the ground and why didn't you just take the tree's out whole with your backhoe? They fall over easy with the backhoe when you dig all around them and then push where you want it to fall, but it's ten times the work to get a stump out of the ground.

Well, I have had the entire area professionally timbered and the proceeds will now pay for excavating the stumps digging the key and the dozer work. I'm left with a huge pile of tree tops in the middle of the pond that I'm going to let dry for a few months and then burn. So it looks like this fall we will build the dam. It sure has made a big difference now that the new home will be waterfront, the wife was a little skeptical but now that she can see it she love it. It's going to be much bigger than originally thought, which is good.
I located and dug up the natural spring and was pleased to see that it is located perfectly above the site so it will be able to feed it.

I will put up some new photos of the site today. Todd

Thanks folks. Here is a shot from the back road, you can now see the back clearly . The dam will be to the right in the ravine. I put a 30 second video below the photo to show the area better.
