Smart battery chargers with reconditioning modes

OK... so it did arrive... took a long time but arrived.

Had a car that was parked almost a year... just parked... battery stone dead.

Took out my new charger and nothing... which I expected.

So I get my jumper cables and connect in paraell from my car... so juice is flowing... hook up the new charger and now have life.

In 36 hours it has gone through several permutations de-sulfate, test, de-sulfate... last night it shows fully charged and good to go... car starts fine.

To fully report I will need to bring my load tester to see just what kind of reserve capacity a 5 year old battery brought back from the Dead has... AC Delco Battery.

Just ran a 300 amp crank test for 1 minute...

Battery dropped to 10 volt but held steady.

Put charger back on and it is in full charge mode.

PS for those following my other thread on WiFi this picture and post made courtesy of my neighbors WiFi

I had to rotate the laptop twice to get a steady signal but success!

Nice early-stage result.

Keep 'em coming..... charger results and pictures...... please !

I learned at an early age that the world can be unfair...... millions of people post inane selfies on the web every day, and I can only recall about 3 pics from you in the decade or so I've been hanging around here.

Very unfair, given the interesting collection you have :).

Back to chargers...... the ones I'm familiar with will automatically terminate in a de-sulphate mode, when working with a healthy battery...... nice to pile on some time in that mode if you can.

I like that picture..... Olde Tech validating New Tech....... nice synergy.......

I'm about as old Tech as you will find around here...

Bought that Silver Beauty Tester in High School... it solved the problem of is this battery good or not... plus measuring charging and light load test

Take a questionable battery, put it on the charger and then test... go or no-go as it were.

I've always been photo challenged... my old MFP had a nice slot for my 1995 Digital Camera card...

Now that I have the work smart phone I can take pictures but need WiFi to send them... so no posting on the fly or from the ski slope, etc...

So it passed test number 1 and now on to number 2

9 year old Interstate Batter in a pickup that has been parked for two years...

Battery is stone dead.

I put the big charger on it on boost and nothing for the first 15 minutes... when I disconnected the under hood light just faded away.

The Smart Charger went though it's permutation and always fail.

So I left the big charger on for about an hour... still very weak under hood light but it did not fully go out when charger removed...

Hooked up the Smart Charger several times before it stopped going to fail...

Left it hooked up and it indicated desulfating...

If I could only own one battery charger this would be IT.

In cases like you just posted I would start it on 6 amp with the manual so smart charger with Desulf feature would start to work in Desulf mode. My Desulf Mode goes back to charge mode after 24 hours so I reset Desulf very morning then again that night so both are working as a team 24/7.

Years ago I found a great battery with only the manual charger on 6 amps will drop to 1 amp within 12-24 hours. If it will only drop to a 3 amp charger replace it before temps drop below freezing. If it will only drop to 2 amps then you may have a year or two left but do not bet the the family farm that it will not die a sudden death when it is most needed.

The great feature of the manual on 6 amp setting when it drops to 1 amp the charger will be outputting a 16 volt equalizing charge at 1 amp. I have forgotten it a few times for a couple weeks all was well if the weather was cold. The smart charger max output is 15.2 volt in Equalize Mode. Now I am talking about Flooded Lead Acid batteries. The smart charger will not go into Equalize mode with set for AGM battery the best I remember.

Two amp mode with go to almost no amperage rate of charging so it can serve as a trickle charger.

Not looking promising for battery number 2... 2011 Interstate in the Silverado.

It was stone dead and older than battery number 1

Charger has been connected for several days and not really making any headway...

Be patient...give it a week before you condemn it.

I had an Interstate that I removed from a vehicle because no start. This was over a year ago. It sat outside all last winter waiting for others to go to the recycler. I had a couple of desulfators I had purchased on the internet, but never used. I took one out of the box and but it on the stone dead battery that had set though one winter. I had a separate charger and the desulfator attached. It took a couple of weeks, but I'm still using that battery! It's trash if you can't get to going, just take you time.

Batteryminder just updated their model 12117 to the model 12117TC. This adds temperature compensation to this model (all of their other models already had temperature compensation), and I believe updates the charging logic. Just like the older model, you can leave this connected to your battery continuously with no problem.

List price is $49.99. At that price, I'd buy the model 1500 instead. However, the model 12117TC is presently on sale to Northern Tool "Advantage" members for $23.99 with free shipping. That's a heck of a deal for a desulfating, temperature compensated, smart battery maintainer/charger.

If you are buying the 12117TC, make sure you are actually ordering (and actually receive) the TC model, not the older 12117 (which lacks temperature compensation).
