One other idea- a friend says that the timing advanced too far will cause the symptoms you are describing. Once the engine warms up the heat kinda self retards the timing so it quits smoking. It may be worth checking.

I believe what Barrettseq suggested sounds correct. Sounds like to me you have a cold engine. White smoke on cold start sounds like engine is cold. No anti-freeze loss is good. If timing was way out is would seem to me the engine would be very noisy all the time. I have never seen mechanical timing ****** itself by the engine warming up. The hair dryer sounds like a real quick and easy check.

Donny, i don't get any white smoke, even when it is 15 degrees out. It just seems like Gmol checked everything else, so it can't hurt to check the timing. And no, i never have timed a diesel, so i don't know ehat type of equip is needed.

It may be time for a Diesel Mechanic diagnosis.
Well guess what. No power to glow plugs or pre-heater now. Got new fuses for the fire wall and a new control box fuse. All fuses in fuse box are fine. Still no power to anything related to pre heating this thing. Mechanic is coming over for a house call in a.m.. Will probably have to plug in block heater to get it started.

Well mechanis came over today and found a blown fuse on a pig tail that the two of us had no idea existed. There are two. Replaced the fuse and she fired right up. He saw the smoke and aggreed it is not right and does think it could be the timing as everything else is new. After it runs for a small eternity it is at a usable/accpetable smoke range. I just have to use it the way it is until I can get it to the shop. Too much work now to be with out it. I just have to let it warm up before we put the throttle to her.
