Smokin' in the boys room!

Though I was a smoker for 20 years and used to dine with my friends quite often, none of us ever smoked WHILE eating. Some would eat faster than others and when finished then light up while others were eating. This bothered me because the smell of smoke in my face while eating ruined the taste of my food. After a while I started explaining this to my friends before we went out to eat and all of them were always courteous enough to refrain from smoking until I got finished eating and then I usually lit up and joined them. There were very few restaurants where the smoke from other tables was bad enough to interfer with my eating except when others were smoking pipes or cigars. I think it all boils down to a matter of courtesy and if more smokers had been more courteous to those around them who were obviously irritated by the smoke, then the gov't probably would not have stepped in. As a smoker I used to always put my cigarette out when I was in a place where I could see people reacting to my smoke. It was not a question of rights, but merely an act of courtesy.;)

Since I have quit smoking my sense of smell has gotten so much better that now the day after I go to a lounge I can smell the tobacco-laden clothes that I wore there. Now I avoid wearing clothes that must be dry-cleaned to these smokey establishments.

I'm fairly certain there's a middle ground on this issue, just like every political hot potato. Either side dramatically over-states their arguement. Neither side will believe a single word of the others rhetoric. My beliefs on the subject aren't nearly as passionate as some. But I'm trying to understand the need for these laws. Here's my take on WHY;

I'm not about to stick my head in the sand and say cigarette smoke ISN'T at all harmfull. We all know it is. Some won't ADMIT it. But we all know it. The degree of harm to which each individual is susceptable varies from not at all, to severe. There are studies by both sides that indicate a desired result. All I can go on is what I've seen for myself.

I grew up in a non-smoking home. My wifes family almost all smokes. My wife smokes. When we started having kids of our own, it was quite evident that our children were effected by my wifes smoking. She USUALLY went outside to smoke, but on occasion she would sit near the fireplace while lighting up. All 3 of our kids were showing signs of emphysema at one stage. Leigh all but quit smoking at home. The kids started showing signs of improvement immediately. She never would smoke around them again. Same rule applies with the grandkids now. From what I've seen, the effects on children are more obvious. Should people need to keep their kids isolated in a bubble because a minority want to smoke whenever and where ever they so desire?

Cigarette smoke may not effect everyone so dramatically. It won't cause instantanious death, or tumors to pop out of your chest, maybe even no effects at all in a long happy life. Or maybe it'll kill you in your 20's. Who's to say which until it happens. I've been around my wifes smoking for more than 40 years with no obvious harm. I'm lucky I guess.

I've seen members of my family become physically ill when around smokers. One of my uncles died from throat cancer at age 52. There was no other history of cancer in dads family. That uncle was a regular cigar smoker. While this isn't conclusive evidence cigar smoking causes throat cancer, it is enough of a reason to make me believe it was a contributing factor at the very least.

For what it's worth, ANY smoke from ANY source is more than likely harmfull to some people, in some way shape or form, to some degree. Is it MY choice, or YOUR choice to arbitrarily decide who is effected by our smoking, with no regard to anyone elses rights?

Should economic considerations outstrip health considerations? Is the ALLMIGHTY dollar more important than the health and well being of the majority?

So why does a cigarette smoker have the right to decide who else breathes their smoke? Why should non-smokers who are effected by a smoker have to isolate themselves to prevent harm or inconvenience from an intrusive, irritating, and to some of us, a NASTY habit of a minority. If an individual wishes to contaminate the air they breath, why should everyone else have to live in a bubble? Doesn't it make more sense that the minority smoker should be the one to make consessions?

Unfortunatly, the world we live in is getting crowded. WAY TOO CROWDED. With people stacked in to a confined area, we have to make our impact on others a little less adverse. Obviously people won't/don't want to do that voluntarily. Then it becomes neccisary to have rules imposed forcing some to recognize the rights of others. I'm opposed to "big government". I don't like being told how I should live. I'd much prefer it if we could all make the right choices on our own with no government intrusion. But I understand when I operate outside the box of "accepted behavior", I'm asking to be ruled against. Simple as that. If smokers would police themselves, quite possibly, the government would have never stepped in, be it on a local level, or national level. But smokers didn't. Now we deal with the inevitable.

Like I've said in earlier post's, I'm nuetral for the most part.(My wife tells me I am ;) ) But I UNDERSTAND why these laws are now being imposed.

If it were entirely up to me, cigarette smokers would voluntarily take it outside, quit stinking up my fresh air, and no new laws would be needed. But we all know THAT won't happen.

Great post FWJ.

Didn't you say something before about adding ROPS to your some of your Masseys? If so my last FSA letter had something in there about getting rebates up to $600 I think if you put a ROPS on an old tractor. If you are interested I will look up the last letter and get you the info.

So, to all of you who think these broad smoking bans are a good thing, do you believe Kelo v New London was a good decision?

Kevin, don't you mean "Kelo v. New London"? However, politics is a prohibited topic on Tractorbynet, and we may have already strayed too far in that direction with this thread.

Bird ,

That's what I get for not proofing what I type.

I just believe this is more a property rights issue than a smokers vs non-smokers rights issue. I do not have any problem with the government saying what you can and cannot do on government property, but I am getting tired of them forcing their agenda on private property owners. When it comes to a restaurant, bar, etc., smoking vs non-smoking should be the decision of the owner. The only part the government should have in the matter is to require posting in a prominent place whether the establishment is smoking or non-smoking. That way, the consumer can make an informed choice. But when they effect these smoking bans, they are removing the property rights of the owners. That is why I injected the reference to that abomidable decision.

And you and I well know how these silly little precedents have a way of snowballing and morphing into something totally different. Today's target smokers, tomorrow's overweight people,etc.,etc.

You are right, the government should also get rid of health inspectors because these bar and restaurant owners should be smart enough to have clean and healthy establishments without having to have the government tell them to. Its just another case of the government pushing their agenda on private business.

I'm curious to see when they will tax the bottle as much as they tax the pack, bet we will really see the brown storm hit the fan then. Oh and when that is accomplished your "thing" WILL be next on THEIR list. Don't worry if you go for a ride in my vehicle, I won't smoke if it offends you, however we will be making stops along the way .

ME TOO js5020!!! I'm getting in on this thread very late but I smoke, I have smoked for quite a number of years now, and I will continue to smoke. Yeah, they're hitting smokers now, but just wait until they start taxing the bottle as hard, like you said.

As a smoker, I'll show non smokers as much courtesy as they show me, and when sitting in a smoking section of a restaurant, if a family with little children is seated next to me because there is no where else to sit, and the parents ask me NICELY to please not smoke because of their little children, I will put out my cigarette and stop smoking. If however, they get nasty about it or snotty, with those "remarks" they like to make, in any way, they can just get up and wait for a table in non smoking. Most of the times I have been confronted, I have found smokers to be MUCH MORE courteous than non smokers, who tend to think they are better, for some strange reason. Even waitresses will tell you that smokers tip more and are generally easier to get along with as customers.
