( Are the glo plugs on the new Boomers used for all starts? )

Yes, they cycle on for 6 seconds on all starts. This is one of the relays that is connected to the ignition. The real question is weather or not you wait for them to go full cycle before starting the tractor.

As Jerry stated, the glow plugs on the TC18 have no timer.
Is this the same on the TC21 and TC24, or are they on a timer like the bigger Boomers?

I always give mine several seconds when starting mine cold.
I always have a "puff" of black smoke during a cold start, but I attributed this as a "diesel" thing.

The TC25, 29 and 33 Operator's Manual indicates;

'To pre-heat the engine, turn the key switch to the "HEAT" position and hold the key in this position until the cold start indicator light goes out (approximately four seconds)...NOTE: When the ambiant temperatures are colder, a longer pre-heat time is necessary. Even after the cold start indicator light has gone out, the glow plugs will continue to heat if the key is held in the "HEAT" position.'

Hey, Murph. Isn't your engine warranty 3 years? I think your engine isn't the only thing "blowin' smoke." It sounds like your dealer is also "spittin' and sputtering" some too. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think it's interesting that the owners of TCs seem to be split about half and half with some saying their tractors do this and others saying theirs don't and never did. My tractor starts and runs perfectly even with the throttle pulled all the way back. It goes up to 1200 rpm, down to 700 rpm, and settles out about perfectly just below 1000 rpm and doesn't miss a beat.

I'm wondering if this is a very critical adjustment (pronounced "very hard to get it right") that some shops don't want to tackle? There is just something not right here and I don't think it's glow plugs, although I admit that was my first impression. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I just hope it's not as common as it seems to be here. If I were TCowner, I'd be writing some letters and ringing some phones about this problem. Maybe Shibaura's quality control is slipping at their engine factory. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

( . I don't think I have ever seen a tractor that doesnt behave like that. Its a diesel engine and that is how they are natured. When you shut your tractor off, there is still some fuel that remains in the cylinder. The fumes evaporate some leaving oily residue. On startup, that residue has to burn off.. hence the smoke and sputtering.
)

Then you have been around alot of diesel's thats not running right.. BTW where is the fuel left over whene shutting down the engine .Coming from????? The fuel is shut off at the pump their is no more fuel to be left over...... Now Back to this sputtering and smoking . 2 reasons i can think of is Glow Plug time not long enough.. Injector pump timing needs advanced a bit .

Jim,

My TC29D did not do it for the first two years. I had some water problems when I first got the tractor but just this last winter it started to do it. I keep it in a garage that is kept at 60 degrees. Even now with the weather above 70 it starts that way. I know if I take it in they will look at it. I just think it is easy for them to say that every diesel is different and runs different and I do believe them when they make that statement. I will call them again and tell them to come out and look at it but I did only think the warranty was two years??

Sorry, I should have been more specific. What I have said is true for the TC 40 D, but may not be for other models.

Briggs_Man, your reply was to my message, but you quoted Typhoon. I read your post and thought, "Hey! I didn't say that!" /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Then I realized what you had done. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I agree completely with you and your analysis of how a diesel engine should run.
