Yeah, it was too deep to sled in, pulled my younger son over to my parents house behind the tractor. Felt bad, it was his birthday and we couldn't get the requested McDonald's for dinner or pick up his cake from Walmart

Dang,, when the sleds are hooked to the rope,, the grandchildren don't think about food,,
the only thing I hear is "Keep going,, POP POP !!",,

He didn't either, that's why I took him over, so he could have some fun and distract him from his disappointment. He doesn't ask for much usually so he was pretty upset that he wasn't going to get his McD and cake he asked for, luckily the sled ride cheered him up.

That's got to be very embarrassing (to say the least) to certain state officials that's responsible for the roads.
I'm sure that there's some circumstances that were involved the didn't make the news, but really? It's all I'm hearing on the radio today.

The forecast was dead on accurate, BUT the timing was impossible and unfortunately most of the steering wheel holders on the road do not have proper winter weather equipment and tires on their vehicles. Many drive with summer only performance tires and then are shocked they have no traction. Many didn't have full tanks of fuel so once they first got stuck, they idled out of fuel. None of these people keep blankets/sleeping bags/food or water in their vehicles - they just assume they will always make it to Point B. There was also a 6 tractor trailer accident that initially gummed up the works. Once the traffic was stopped/slowed , the snow rates of 3.5 inches per hour made movement essentially impossible for those folks and then the plows couldn't get through either. The heavy wet snow also took out trees and power for a huge stretch which left the VDOT traffic control center blind.

Don't know exactly what happened, but it was a heavy rain with a quick temp drop overnight turning to ice and then heavy snow. They couldn't pre treat due to the rain and then the fine, wet snow was packing down quickly. A lot of the clearing efforts were hampered due to downed trees/ limbs which caused a lot of delays for the plows.
This is one of the nastier ice/snow storms I've seen here in a while.

I've also heard there's been a shortage of plow drivers this year due to vaccine requirements and late payments last year(haven't confirmed this though).

Hard to believe I was in a t-shirt changing the shocks on the truck 2 days ago!

And yet some VA officials will probably get a promotion or pay raise because of it.

You are correct... People are stupid to always assume they will make it to point B. My truck is always provisioned with wool blankets, water, food, and yep... a P cup! I've been stuck a couple of times 8 to 10 hours.

Coldsteelva that makes perfect sense. It's been over 12 years since I've lived in that region and have forgotten how "numb" most of the drivers are (about snow) and to a point, it's understandable. Then a big contributor is the road temperature. Being very warm just a day or two before, I've forgotten that one single car track turns the snow into a hard slush, impossible to drive on regardless of what tires you have.
Did you get your power back on?

Looks like we won't get hit as bad, or at all, with that one, for now anyways. Weather seems to have a way of changing at the last minute though......

We had 12" of snow & lost power for 15 hours! I had bought new chains ( several ) fuel mix enough for 8 gallons for my chainsaws, Both tractors have full tanks ! & I've been spliting seasoned rounds of wood since the beginning of Nov. I always plan on being ready , & live by the motto better to have it & not need it , Than need it & not have it ! It did get down to 18 degrees that night & I managed to keep the house at 71 degrees all night . The the only thing I was not ready for is the loss 85% of the evergreens on my property & the clean up took a day in a half Just to clean my driveway were 100% of them came down !Glad I'm retired.

I can't even imagine how I would react to being on a road and told I can't drive home on it. I'm guessing there must have been a good bunch of people who didn't agree and tried to make their way off the highway too? Clogging things up even more probably?

Yup, same here, probably going to take a couple days to clean up the driveway area alone, upper part isn't bad but the lower part going to the shop is a mess. I'd say I'm also at least 85%+ of evergreens are down or broken here, lot of hangers too.

This is standing next to the attached garage looking down the drive to the shop, you can just make out my B2620(it had the grapple on it). Garage took a light hit as did the wife's car, now I have to get a replacement side mirror for it.......

Still no power here, hopefully by morning or early tomorrow, luckily I have plenty of wood and still some fuel for the generator, going to go fuel up tomorrow as long as it isn't a mess out there.
I need diesel for the tractors and I've used up almost all of my ethanol free gas for the small engines.

Powers been out for 38hrs as of 11 tonight, so far I've put 16hrs on the gen.

WOW
Didnt realize VA DOT dropped the ball so badly on the road salting/plowing! Who’s in charge down there, anyway?

we lost power Jan 3 @ 0815, still off.
last night, received a text from the coop saying power should be restored @ 2100 on 1/06. Shortly after, got another text saying power has been restored. Then another that power will be restored @ 2100 on 1/06. Bad enough the power is down, quit screwing the pooch on the admin stuff.

All electric vehicles and equipment with no fossil fuel power backups makes for someone’s dream life until reality smacks them in the face. We were using a Volvo L20, skid steers and tractors to try and open up streets in the neighborhood. Try doing that on a battery.
