So how would you build a stump buster

Below is a much smaller version of stump remover. I have thought about this option for a skid steer. Some of the planetary gear drives on post hole digers would appear to be strong enough to handle this type cutter. Might need to fabricate the actual auger/planer.

It looks to be about the same speed as the post hole digger. Correct me please.

It looked a lot slower than post hole diggers to me. It also looked a lot bigger, too. Some of those stumps were over a foot across. I think the PT425, if scaled down accordingly, could do maybe 2-3" stumps like that. :laughing:

I would guess the OP got the idea from here as we have been talking about them on another thread. If this machine could handle it, is it possible our 425s could?

I worry about the arms as well. Seems like serious side load. I found this at Surplus

Seems like it would work but then how do you build a strong enough bit to deal with that load. Then again maybe the load isn't all that much.

But at the end of the day this looks way safer than me trying to build a stump grinder......

10K torque.. crazy stuff. 140 RPM. Those grinders look around 60 to 80 RPM

I do think the arms on my PT would be a week point. But then again, that drill would be pulling itself along.

Just nor sure how to build something that would survive that torque...

The hyd auger would turn that bit. It does need to be sharp, and it only cuts a thin slice per rotation. The 425 has 8 GPM's, and that is more than a lot of tractors.

On a large stump, they bore several holes, and then collapse the standing pieces.

Torque is not a big deal as the relief would activate.

Look again. The fastest one on the big blue tractor was only going 30RPM. The one on the big green tractor looked to be less than 20 RPM and the one that looked like a hole saw appeared to be about 20 RPM.

I think a larger motor would be in order.

Even if you used this hyd motor from Surplus Hydraulics, the rpm at 20 GPM would be about 162, so it appears that the shaft is turning a planetary gear set to drop the rpm down and raise the torque. 162 rpm through a 6 to 1 reduction, gives about 27 rpm, and raises the torque to 4,193 ft lbs.

I would say look again not at how slow they are turning but at how those large tractors are moving around. I can not believe that our machines would survive. Our loader arms have no sideways bracing while 3 pt hitches have some.

So JJ, why is this a motor you would choose over the other? I see it says heavy duty, but if you are running through some sort of planetary set then the stress would not be so much on the motor, would it? Also, the wheel motors I presented had much higher torque figures.

Just curious as I am learning.

And yeah guys, I split my PT in half. I don't think I am going to risk this in the long run, although I am stil l wondering why a stump grinder with all the vibration, or a 30" planter head post hole digger isn't any more stressful than this device...
