I'm surprised about the BMW. My family has both a Mazda and a Toyota with proximity keys. Both cars beep loudly at you if you walk away with the key in your pocket while they are still running. Surprised the BMW doesn't do this. Or, shut off automatically after x minutes without moving and without the key nearby.

Even with a beeper, it's still not owner proof..... apparently more than a few people have driven off in their own car, with the "key" still in the possesion of the valet.....

Makes me glad that I can't afford the latest toyz

I would not be surprised that it can be done...

12 years ago their were about 50 custom programming changes that could be made on a 3 series plus a few more that were not published...

I'm at my one year anniversary with a Leaf in Oregon on a 2 year lease as my Mon-Fri driver. $2000 down, $122/month. I've driven 11,300 miles out of the 12,000 allotted to date. Maintenance has consisted of a single tire rotation at 6k miles and checking air in the tires as the temps change. Nothing else.

It drives well, has plenty of power (including on steep grades - though it sucks juice hard), quick off the line. Quiet as a bunny to drive. You don't need a charger, I just use a 110v plug in my garage. I use about 60% of the capacity for my commute and it is fully charged when I get in in the morning. It charges at a rate of just over 1Kwh per hour and that adds about 4 miles of range per hour of charging on 110v. It likes temps between 35 and 85, which is normal here in the PNW.

Big enough to fit an upright string bass in the back with the seats down. 2 adults and 3 kids is fine for short trips. My wife tries to "steal" it from me when she can.

On the weekends I drive my old 97 Montero as a people hauler or my Nissan Titan for hauling horses and long road trips.

No complaints, would do it again and probably will. The federal subsidy is what makes it an unbeatable deal.

What was the dreaded User Interface that was always being joked about, iDrive ?

Therein lies one of the problems with modern vehicles.... many consumers can't be bothered to program/play with even 10% of the available features in these high-end platforms....

Something like a BMW could well do with something like a Concierge Programming Service.... have a checklist of key programmable features available on a Service Waiting Area pamphlet - and have them programmed during that visit as the customer checks off on the list.

Many people may want to see some of these wizzy features working, few want to wade through the programming steps....

You've hit on why the industry has a big issue with EVs. You didn't buy even 1 oil fiter, nor any fluids during that time..... The auto industry gets to sell a lot fewer parts and fluids to the EV customer !

I haven't chased down the numbers, but think of how much crude gets chewed up every year, just in crankcase oil for IC engines !

That's common for modern cars today. Most run 11,300 miles from new with nothing. Nothing unusual in that! HS

Depending where you live, that distance may be within factory OCI intervals for an IC engine.

There is always the debate raging on how long you can go on an oil change.... but personally, I wouldn't buy a new vehicle with an IC engine and then still continue to drive with the factory crankcase oil a year later - that would be sub-optimal (being polite) given my climate.

And obviously, that the story doesn't change with an EV at 2, 3, or 4 years later.

Given how little maintenance many people get done on normal vehicles, an EV is a pretty good fit in that respect.

Anyone see the car tipping of EV's this weekend in SFO? Lots of conversation on how many people it took...
Those are SMART cars. Those are not electric (EV).

Okay, the reports are saying 'mini-electric'. I wasn't aware the SMART EV was available, yet. My coworkers SMART is gas.
