in a little 2 acre undeveloped lot in the middle of town early on this Saturday morning.
I finish first and the other tractor is still going.
I'm hooking up and I look up and there's a big balloon with about 10 people in it. I wave, they wave back.
pretty cool.
I finish hooking up and look up again.
Boy, that balloon is getting big.
Oh, that balloon is going to land in our freshly mowed field.

I get the other tractor's attention and the driver looks up and sees a great big balloon and she hustles the tractor out of the way.
Boom, right there in the middle of the field a nice big balloon.

Definitely never had that happen before.

I was mowing pastures at our old farm on a warm spring day about 10 years ago. Totally oblivious to the world around me, I had no clue it was the morning of the Kentucky Derby Festival Great Balloon Race. I was even less "aware" of the giant hot air balloon that was shaped like the energizer bunny as it floated over my head, probably 100' off the deck....Until I made a turn and was looking almost straight at the tail end of a BIG rabbit.

and no photo?

I know
2 hours later I'm like "ohhhh, my phone has a camera, duh, why didn't I take a picture?"
I felt really dumb.

it was cool though.

Crazy balloonists think they can just land on anybody's field....

Reminds me of a joke. I don't think it will be lost on this tech savvy audience:

A man flying in a hot air balloon suddenly realizes heç—´ lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts to get directions, "Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?"

The man below says: "Yes. You're in a hot air balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field."

"You must work in Information Technology," says the balloonist.

"I do" replies the man. "How did you know?"

"Well," says the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but It's of no use to anyone."

The man below replies, "You must work in management."

"I do," replies the balloonist, "But how'd you know?"

"Well", says the man, "you don稚 know where you are, or where youæ±*e going, you expect me to be able to help. Youæ±*e in the same position you were before we met, but now itç—´ my fault."

This discussion reminds me of what happened a couple of years ago when I was mowing one of my larger pastures. A neighbor who has an ultra lite aircraft decided to land in the field where I had already mowed. It was a lot rougher landing than he had anticipated but no damage to him or equipment. The field wasn't so nice and smooth like he thought it would be.

Several years ago, I was up early one Sunday morning and out in the garage when I heard a terrific roar. I stepped out in the driveway to see what it was, and my next door neighbor came running out of his house, barefoot, and in his pajamas, just as a balloon barely cleared our roofs. I don't know why he got so low right in town, but he sure had all burners kicked in trying to gain altitude. My neighbor said his first thought was that a jet airplane was about to hit our houses.

I did that once. The breeze died about 50' from the field we were trying to land in, so there we sat for the last 45 minutes. You get a knack for stopping in mid sentence while the burners are on..

I was lucky enough to get a pic of the Goodyear Blimp going over my house in 2006. We just don't see things like this around here.

tradition is a bottle of wine. I prefer beer myself too.

I would accept that too. I think the OPs story was wonderful, but through no fault of the OP, the balloonists let us all down because he was unable to truthfully add:

And they had beer! (wine!)
And it was perfectly chilled!!!
And the basket sides folded down to reveal an all woman crew in string bikinis,
the official uniform of the internationally famous Swedish National Massage team!

Now that you know my expectations, I think it is more than fair to say the LEAST they could have done for the OP and his story is bring cold beer! After all, he provided a freshly mowed field right when they needed one.

Don't balloons do more of a controlled crash than a landing? Seems most of the landings I've seen they just skid along until they hit something solid.
