So what do the Safety police say about this?

As long as its empty..... or loaded with something really light, I'm not concerned about him towing that trailer with a mini-pickup. What i AM concerned about is that guy he ran over that appears to be still stuck under the back of the trailer !!!:eek:

He might just be hauling hay bales.. realitively light.. but takes up the space... if a 20' x 7' bed.. he probably gets 4 medium bales on.. bales in my area are probably only700- 800# in that size... IF he has electric brakes.. I think he's probably ok...

In many states, they will ticket you for pulling a trailer with a rating higher than you can pull. They don't care if it's full or not.

So, hauling an empty 12,000 GVW trailer, which weighs say - 2500 empty behind a truck with a max 8,000 GVW truck will result in a ticket.

I dont see a problem with that gooseneck/nissan setup. So long as the electric brakes are working properly and set up right.Goosenecks pull way better than a bumper pull.Id rather see that than what i see here all the time...the same Nissan with a 24ft tanden axle boat behind it,towed off the rusty bumper (2000 lb rated when new)which is flexing like a palm tree in a hurricane....
Also that trailer isnt very heavy duty,or heavy for that matter, and any full frame pickup truck can tow 4-5000lbs,especially a GN,just gotta keep the load back over the trailer axles if its heavy.

That almost makes sense.

I was thinking the same thing...there is no set rule for towing and weights.DOT law is pretty basic, they do not care about what is towing what, total length, and width matter, they measure each axle individually, and care that the axles are not over there rated GAWR,and the tires/rims are adequete for that number. Then they care that the max registered GVWR is not exceeded on both units. If done properly you can tow a 24000 GVWR tanden dual gooseneck trailer with a 3/4 ton 8800 GVWR(thats tagged for 11,000 GVWR) (truck has a 5200 GAWR front axle, and a 6500GAWR rear axle)truck legally,(35,000GCWR)Ive seen it done many times.

I wish I could haul my BX on a trailer behind my Toyota Nissan or Dodge D50 pick ups.
That would be great and I would not have to buy a big full size clumsy awkward truck that I hate.

i wouldnt even think twice about hauling a bx1500 on my single axle trailer behind my 2008 Tacoma 4x4 4 cylinder 5-speed. might be a slower ride, but i wouldnt think it'd be unsafe or overloaded. I'd put that 'lil guy in the bed of my w250 Cummins and away we go...........

I know for a fact hat our DOT's around here would find fault with that..He would'nt get far off the gravel roads....Why do you need a 5'th wheel on a small truck..?

That's what I thought. Maine CMVE would stop that because the trailer empty is over GVW.

i have NEVER seen, or heard of first hand, a personal vehicle get hasseled by DOT for any reason. I do shady stuff w/my personal trucks that i could never get away with the vehicle was company owned or had a DOT number.

why do you think all these clowns can get away having a camper wayyyyy to big for their truck, or people that should never be allowed to drive a car are allowed to drive these 40ft long bus-based motorhomes that anyone else would need a CDL and commercial insurance?

In general, DOT saftey regs do not apply to private individuals.

I know this is a bit of an old thread. But I had to mention. When I was about 5 I remember my dad towing a flatbed semi trailer behind his 86 Chevy pickup.

The truck looked like the one in the link. http://www.slonaker.net/images/truck/clean.jpg The front wheels of the truck were almost off the ground. And he had the trailer loaded with an old combine, truck cab and a bunch of other steel.

It was a friends trailer. I really don't know how that truck managed to pull that load. My dad was having a hard time stopping the truck.

The brakes were smoking like crazy. Aw the memories. lol
