I have been tractorin for some time since I bought my farm last year. This pass Saturday, I was still cleaning up some of my fields of brush and logs with my 4341.1 Zetor tractor, loader, and farm wagon that some stupid fool left a mess in some of my fields from logging before I bought it.

I know there are some loggers that are not as bad as others, but a lot of loggers here in Kentucky do nothing but leave a big mess on a farm after they get through logging. One thing that I know for sure on my farm, there will NEVER be another log cut on my farm as long as I own it.

Cabin, if you do want trees cut, hire a consulting forester, not affiliated with a logging company. Let him write the contract. It was worth every dime of the 15% off the top he got. My place was logged and you can hardly tell. I also have enough left to log again a few more times before I croak.

Re: SO..What \"tractorin\'\" did you do over the weekend?

Yup, don't let a poor logging job prevent you from using your forest resources right. The mess you found was likely to save him some $ in preparing a landing or cleaning up.

Also, just because a company chips tops doesn't make them a good logger. Tops and slash rot and provide nutrients to the soil, and protect seedlings from browsing deer.

Hire an independant forestor for sure. he will make a harvest plan and help write a contract to put you in the best position.

Even if doing the work yourself his services are valuable. I have been logging our land for a bit and trying to decide what trees to cull, spacing for thinning and what markets are good or bad right now is a lot of info.

The best place to store a tree is on the stump. Your money grows at a great rate!

The loggin on my farm was done before I bought it last year. The way you stated in your post to me would be the way that I would have done it.

Most people here in Kentucky before they sell a farm, they will cut most of the timber off of it. They don't care what a mess they leave the farm in afterwards. The only thing they care about is the money they will get from the timber before they sell it. I bought my farm at a auction. The owner was needing money, and was about to go under business wise.

I still have some nice timber on this farm, but it is not a lot. The loggers didn't cut all the timber down to a 2X4. It is a wonder they hadn't though.

The breeder should be declawed too!

Such a beautiful animal and sad story.

Kudo's to you for your volunteer work - that's fantastic!

Re: SO..What \"tractorin\'\" did you do over the weekend?

Well, You have lots of seasoned firewood /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cut it, split it and tie 5 chunks together with binder twine and sell it at a campsite to townies at 7-8 bucks a pop. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

People actually pay that for a campfire /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Or cut it, split it and haul it to the Boston area. They get 250/cord near where my sister lives. I am half tempted to drag a trailer full along on the next visit to pay for the gas. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks Leo. I know what the guy's been through to some extent as I did the same with my wife for 14 months. Everything gets out of hand. Just think of all the seat time I can get while helping someone else out!!
If we all just help a little, we accomplish a lot.

I'm cleaning up an area for my next door neighbor.
He had a fenced in pen for a couple of rabbit dogs for several years.
He's 84 years old and has been caring for his wife for the past 4 years.
She's had a couple of strokes.
They have been our next door neighbors for 39 years.
They had been here for several years before we moved here in 1966.

Re: SO..What \"tractorin\'\" did you do over the weekend?

A little late, but this last weekend I leveled an area behind the barn for a 70' round pen. Got to really use the box blade to full effect on this project. Thanks to TBN I didn't have to go through a huge learning curve to figure out the optimal way to use the BB. Also got the rotary cutter and finish mower out of storage, and got them ready for this seasons work.

Did my 100 hour (125 actually) fluid change, and greased everything in sight!
