Yup, don't let a poor logging job prevent you from using your forest resources right. The mess you found was likely to save him some $ in preparing a landing or cleaning up.
Also, just because a company chips tops doesn't make them a good logger. Tops and slash rot and provide nutrients to the soil, and protect seedlings from browsing deer.
Hire an independant forestor for sure. he will make a harvest plan and help write a contract to put you in the best position.
Even if doing the work yourself his services are valuable. I have been logging our land for a bit and trying to decide what trees to cull, spacing for thinning and what markets are good or bad right now is a lot of info.
The best place to store a tree is on the stump. Your money grows at a great rate!

I know there are some loggers that are not as bad as others, but a lot of loggers here in Kentucky do nothing but leave a big mess on a farm after they get through logging. One thing that I know for sure on my farm, there will NEVER be another log cut on my farm as long as I own it.
