I think Curly Dave is correct and if something isn't done about the labor cost then they will go under.... But didn't UAW strongly back Obama with lots of funds ... so he's in their back pocket ... I wonder who else has him in their back pocket.... American Politics needs to go into some reorganization.

I think that bankruptcy is a better option than some kind of a bailout. I agree that it will create an environment where actual change and improvement is likely. A bailout will just reward the irresponsible behavior and encourage the status quo.

Ditto.

Bankruptcy doesn't mean gone forever. it's a legalized restructuring process.

I'm looking at the upside of this. I think this may give the automakers some way of finally riding themselves of the UAW and the topheavy corp structure that killed them in the first place.

I could also see a scenario where they may build only trucks.

I hope you are right, they have needed to trim the fat for years. There are way to many riding the big 3's coattails and UAW.

I have never understood the Unions. Seems like someone is getting rich. It reminds me of the mafia. Go to the mom and pop stores and sell insurance policies. You pay us and you will have no problems, you don't ____________. The Unions seem like a legalized mafia. But just enough to keep the law off them minus the donations they make to keep the law looking the other way.

It's as if the unions turned the car companies into union benefits providers that just happen to produce cars on the side.

A bailout will just prolong the inevitable.

I loved the ones in Congress arguing that they shouldn't use the 25 billion already loaned for energy effecient car R&D as bailout money but to give 'em a new 25B loan. Dumbest logic I ever heard - the big 3 are on the verge of collapse - not sure R&D is really that important when they're just trying to stay alive. If they don't get the new 25B they'll just default on the existing - if they get it, they'll just default on both.

Knowing that GM is ever so close to filing backruptcy would you still buy a new truck?

I haven't read a single response to your question, but I would. The only thing their chapter 11 will do is stiff all of the outsource vendors, retirees and senior employees. There's nothing the consumer has to worry about.

Just imagine the deals offered on loaded one ton diesel duallies the day after GM files for bankruptcy. Might be time to trade in my '93 F350.

You think that, but I'll bet your trade is going to drop about as much as the new vehicles. The people who are going to be singing a song are the ones who are ready to pay cash on the barrel head. I'll bet that when the prices are at their lowest due to uncertainty, it will even be hard to get any kind of financing.
