Glenn -

I can certainly relate to the "no job" part of your 222-word diatribe, but let's face it -- the only reason you don't have a state-of-the-art digital camera today is that you sunk your fortune into disposable culvert pipes last year. As I understand it, those very pipes recently surfaced in the Tora Bora region.

Dan -

Truth be told, I bought my own digital camera for work purposes (web development) before I ever heard of TBN. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif It's kinda like a front end loader, though -- no matter what you got it for, you just keep finding more and more uses for it. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

BTW -- that's a pretty nice web site you got there yourself. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Harv

Thanks - I belong to a couple BB's so lots of times my website suffers while I escape Vet Med. I do enjoy teaching so I keep adding to it all the time.

It is incredible. I bought a Richo (sp??) digital camera about 4 years ago. Although it takes nice pictures they are junk compared to my Sony Mavica I got about two years ago and I'm afraid if I looked at what's available now - it also would be junk. I guess in this fast changing puter world ya gotta add lots of stuff to the discard drawer mentioned above that is full of old cell phones, etc. LOL

Oh well

TBN really got me wanting a digital camera. I've been going nuts the last couple of weeks, trying to figure out what camera to buy. Go cheap & learn first? Don't think I need anything more than 2 mp's. Rechargeable battereies? ac adapter cord? media reader? etc. etc. I kind of got a habit of overresearching until I'm goofy.Been real envious of all the pics that have been posted. Hopefully I can come up with something soon.

That's what I would do and did... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Too bad you couldn't do the same with compact tractors.../w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

That's what I did. Picked up a used 1.2Mpixel Fujitsu from Ebay for about half the cost of a new one (with similar attributes).

The market is changing rapidly now with the newer, cheaper, more mega pixels CCD design... you should be able to buy closeout/older model (6 months /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif) brand new with warranty and experiment to find exactly what you want/need in a camera...

Sample specs for low/mid range digcam...

resolution - 2MP (min)

storage - 64MB or bigger and multiple cards if you plan to take pictures away from your PC [compact flash is the most "standard" (generally cheaper, more choice)... memory stick (Sony cameras only?) is the least "standard" (more $, less choice)... smart media cards are a bit less "standard" than the compact flash.]

power - rechargable batteries; two sets are nice so you can use one while the other is charging...

download - serial is slow, but, available on "all" PCs; USB is quite fast and standard on almost all new PCs.

zoom - if it is important, get optical zoom... forget digital; you can do the same with software after the fact.

It has been mentioned before, but, DPReview is a great site for reviews, general information, and discussion groups. Steves-Digicam is also suppose to be good.

The choices are amazing right now! Good Luck!
