Spencer's Pole Barn Project

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Our local lumber yard said it started with the northeast power outage. It shut down a Canadian mill and the price jumped. Then the government order. Next the hurricane. I expect we're stuck with the higher prices for sheet lumber for at least 6 months. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Wow! I read the entire thread! I'm scared how long my project is going to take!

I built a small pole barn a few years ago, 14x14x14 and it took a good month to build in evenings. Most of the time was head scratching I figure.

I now have plans for a 2400 sq. ft. post and beam shop built on a slab, to be built myself. This will be fun!

I'm glad I didn't know it was going to take me this long when I started. I didn't underestimate the amount of work it would take to build the barn I just overestimated the amount of time I would have to work on it. When I am not working on the road I am taking care of our now 3 year old daughter. Last year when she was two I couldn't really spend any time working on the project when she was with me. This year it is getting a little easier. I don't know if any of you noticed the playset down by the barn in this photo. That didn't end up being built there on accident. It was nice being up working on the roof this last weekend and still being able to keep a good eye on her. I just blocked off the driveway so nobody could unexpectedly drive in before I could get down from the roof. I can actually mow the lawn now with her too. Here is a picture of her on my new lawn tractor.

They sure do change a lot in a short period of time.

Spence,

You're doing a beautiful job with this pole barn. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif This thread provides a ton of instruction on things to be careful about and what to do and not to do. Thanks for sharing your insights along the way. You have special talents that you have the potential to capitalize on. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Weekend Update

I had a good day and a half to work on the pole barn roof this weekend. That is enough time to put a lot of sheathing down but not enough time to get it covered up from the elements. I priced out 1/2" plywood and the cheapest I found was at Lowe's for 15.58 per sheet. Because the price is so high it was easy for me to justify buying treated plywood instead. The 1/2" treated plywood was 16.99 a sheet so that is only 1.41 more. I could safely put up the treated plywood and not worry about it being exposed to the elements. I've got a lot of work coming up (I work on the road) so I know it will be at least November before I can attempt to put shingles up. I bought 20 sheets and got all of them put up. I still have 7 more sheets to put up on the top row and those 3 triangular pieces to finish off the one valley and then all the sheathing will be done. Then I have to trim the overhangs, put up the fly rafters, etc., etc. IT MAY NEVER END /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I might be scraping snow off the roof to put shingles on this winter but even as the roof is now I know I won't have to scrape ice off my windshield /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here is the first of two pictures.

Second picture

Its weird how the perceived size of the barn changes as the building gets farther along. Before I had any trusses up the thing seemed huge. Then after the trusses were on the building seemed smaller. Now the a lot of the roof sheathing is on the building seems larger again.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Spencer,

You did good on the price of that PT plywood. Around here they jacked it up to better than $ 22 per sheet. And the 3/4 is over $30 per sheet!

Once you get that roof fully shingled you will be home free. Hope you can get it done before the snow flies... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I got those 3 triangular pieces finished up on the valley on Monday night. It may not seem like much progress but getting those valleys finished is a big relief for me. I have quite a variation of colors of wood in this photo. I have two different brands of pressure treated plywood on the main roof. On the valleys it is all the same plywood but the three pieces I put up didn't have the Thompson's water seal on them yet when I took the photo.
