It's fully shingled now !!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here is a picture taken at this time last year to show how much (or little) progress has been made on this project in exactly one year.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Here is a picture from this last Saturday morning. I don't have the use of my pickup truck (maybe a story for a different thread) so I had the materials delivered. As long as I was having them delivered I thought I may as well have them delivered up onto the roof. The delivery charge was $39.95 and the roof delivery was .75 cents per bundle of shingles.

This picture shows the Ice Shield and the tar paper going on the roof. The Ice Shield was used on the bottom eves and in the valleys.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

This picture shows most all of the tar paper on the roof now. If you have been following this thread at all you know that there is no way I made this much progress in a few hours working by myself. I have done at least 95% of this whole project with just me and my tractor but I decided to hire a roofing contractor to get these shingles on for me.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

This picture shows the roof being shingled over to the first valley. There were five roofers here for a good portion of the day. Three of them were leaders and two of them were helpers (three helpers if you count me).

This picture shows the shingles being run both ways into the first valley.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

I've seen roofs where they use only the Ice Shield, no tarpaper.

Do you still have to get the Ice Shield covered within so many days with the shingles?

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

My tractor and the personnel lift that I built for it got in on the act a little bit. That Ice Shield that was put down on the bottom three feet of the eves is extremely slippery. The roofing contractor had initially told me to make sure I bought the granulated style instead of the smooth style. The employee at the building department at Menards told me the smooth style was better so I called the roofer up and asked him if it was ok to use the smooth stuff. He said sure because my roof was only a 4/12 pitch. Even though it was only a 4/12 pitch using this smooth stuff was pretty dangerous. I can see now why he initially wanted the granulated stuff. He did concede that the smooth stuff seemed to be a better product.

Mike, last year (on page two of this thread) I was asking if there was a product I could put on that would be better than tar paper and last me all winter. I think this Ice Shield would have been the perfect product to use. I didn't know about it until recently or I probably would have used it.

Re: Spencer\'s Pole Barn Project

Here is a picture of the tricky part. They started the shingles on one side of the roof but stopped at the top of the first valley. They they started at the bottom of the other side of the roof and worked their way back up to the top of the valley. Maybe its not that impressive if you are a roofer but I sure was impressed that the shingles met up properly at the top.
