Standing on Platform on FEL?

/ Standing on Platform on FEL? #21
Been climbing into the FEL bucket to cut low branches for more than 20 yrs.
The new MX Kubota has a smallish bucket so I swapped it out for the Skid Steer bucket that has almost 3x5 ft of deck space.
That flatter bigger bucket feels much safer. But at nearly 70 yrs old I can only climb in at about 3 ft off the ground.
So I built a 2 rung ladder that hangs off the front of the bucket out of scrap 1.5 angle iron. It has 2 pins to secure it and hangs down 2ft (2 steps). I'm able to trim all the branches that hit the tractor roof now. It's not pretty but it works

I have a HF 1 man platform ( about 4x4 with a cage) I use this on the CAT forklift.
I made a remote control lever operator to raise and lower that but ... I'm not sure that if really safe. lol

I either have my wife ( not sure how good of an idea that is) or my Nephew or brothers run the tractor when I'm up in the bucket, it's even better when my Nephew gets in it and I can just drive and point. 🤠

I put my kids in it and I operate.....

EDIT: before someone freaks out, my kids are 22 and 35. Not little any more.

What a world we live in when you have to clarify their age for a tractor bucket ride but not a *** change operation. o_O
Stupid ain't it?

If the hydraulics fail when the loader is up in the air, will all four cylinders relax suddenly? Or will it be both lift, or both curl, relaxing together? Or might it just be one of the four?
I'm guessing that there are multiple failure modes here.

I actually had a hydraulic failure while in the bucket of a John Deere 310. Fully extended when a metal hydraulic pipe burst. It slowly descended. I looked back and saw hydraulic fluid blowing out from behind the rear tire. My wife calmly lowered it down and I stepped out of the bucket.
Based on that experience I'm comfortable working out of a bucket
fladogman

this guy got off easy. if i had a choice, i'd rather have a fel arm failure, not the curl. if it's curl, down you go. imho an operator in a raised bucket has far more probability of losing balance, falling, than having an hydraulic failure in the system. esp for tasks using chain & pole saws. regards

What a world we live in when you have to clarify the childs age for a tractor bucket ride but not for a *** change surgery.
The doctor helps with that.

I have several good friends who are transgender, some of whom have had the surgery, and they're all good people. Nobody gives me a hard time when I need surgery, and I wish they could say the same.

Besides, one of them is a good mechanical engineer who designs some pretty massive equipment for a living. I'd be real disappointed if he weren't welcome here. His surgical history doesn't matter. He does some excellent work.

When I built my platform tried an experiment by adding safety legs. Easy to deploy. Only bad thing is they don’t fit under the part of the barn where I store the basket. Basket used more often without safety legs, just lazy on my part. Gets used often as part of the farm maintenance. Wife thankfully is a good operator.

Good ideas. Love the Hammer wrench (y) (y) (y)
Planning a HF trip to get the hammer and wrench to copy that and put it in my tractor toolbox
Thank you for posting

Used every summer to elevate the trees bordering the fields.

Like the idea of a platform on pallet forks, beats climbing a ladder w/a saw. Hardly the right tool for the job but could save considerable time trimming trees, cleaning gutters etc.

Aside from failing hydraulics and lame FEL operators w/out MSL, how about adding backhoe subframe and stabilizer legs (whatever they're called)? Seems like it would help in the safety dept.

Made my platform and real handy around the farm. Wife regularly uses the B26 and is a good operator of the M59.

Made safety legs for the platform. One will hold it up if you release the hydraulics. Design concept I wanted to try. Down side the platform will not fit where it’s stored in the barn so don’t normally use them.

Walk boards can be used different configurations, on rails or extended depending on job. Have ssqa hitch that attaches to the backhoe that allowed reach to one part of the barn.

About 2 weeks ago I was standing on the pallet when this happened. Luckily I was in a position to jump in the opposite direction. No one was injured. Things happen fast.

"backhoe subframe and stabilizer legs (whatever they're called)? Seems like it would help in the safety dept."

Whatever the cost, cheaper than a hospital bill if you weren't so lucky???

ATI attachment.
Part of the barn I couldn’t reach with the FEL. Using the man basket either front or back, the backhoe outriggers are helpful to plumb the tractor on the hillside farm and prevent rolling over.

Plans to try some other ssqa attachments like Danuser Intimdator to pull evasives on steep road banks and hydraulic auger.

You are financially finished if the FEL crashes with anyone outside your immediate family on it.
The deceased's estate would/could still sue, immediate family or not...

only u can decide if its worth the risk, just like motorcycles boats planes etc.....

I personally stand on mine all the time
Big box stores will sell a chainsaw to anyone with a credit card too!
a good note & glad for the safe landing. thinking the failure was in arms, not the curl, being potentially more dangerous. regards
This is the reason I wear a harness and tie off to the carry all.
