"Only LTD Broadband, Charter Communications and Rural Electric Cooperative Consortium won more in total contract values, with $1.3 billion, $1.2 billion, and $1.1 billion awarded, respectively."

What are "these three" doing with .. even more of our tax dollars?

They are land based Internet solutions in the USA.Tax dollars builds most public infrastructure.

But .. what are they doing? Will they be bringing HS Internet to Rural America?

The auction was to incentivize the internet provides to hookup rural customers. Starlink got a small piece of the pie. A traditional internet service provider, LTD broadband walked off with the most, but offered to provide service to the most.

The analogy I would make is to the rural electrification scheme of the thirties when rural coops were paid to get electricity to rural residents.

The $99 Starlink price is just the preorder deposit. When you are eligible, you will get an email letting you pay the balance, or cancel, and to buy options.

All the best,

Peter

If you consider 1/4 of over $4b a small piece of pie.

My Rural Electric Company ran fiber in my area last year and I got connected about 6 weeks ago. I didn't think I would ever have any options other than slow Centurylink DSL before that. The funny thing is that Centurylink got money for improvements also and put a new box down the road but there was no option for increased speed. I would rather see my tax money going to my local electric company than a large conglomerate like CLINK. When I call my local fiber company with questions, I talk to somebody local instead of somebody that has no idea where I'm located.

We are also on fiber and have tv also with our local electric coop. I sent a message via their online contact form about accessing an app that required the service provider on a Saturday evening. Was shocked to get a phone call back from a local rep within 30 minutes. Was expecting a canned reply via email on Monday at the earliest.

I do IT support for a local small co-op in this area, they only do water. They were pretty scared when there was an initiative to have them handle electricity and Internet access. Some years ago, talk to the electrical supply in the area, a Canadian company. They said it was impossible to distribute Internet on their infrastructure, so i sent them info on how to do it, but they didn't think it worth their time.

There is no published contact email or pone number. If you have an account, you need to log on to their web portal. Go to Starlink, and click on the little icon in the upper left to find the log in.

I don't know if you have access to this if you have just paid the $99 deposit, or if you have to be a full user. I was able to skip the deposit stage and just go straight to a paid subscriber when I signed up.

I signed up today with my $99 deposit to get in line. Southern Alabama. Says service to be available mid to late 2021. Deposit is said to be refundable. Well worth the gamble for me. Fingers crossed.

I signed up today and paid the $99. I have been reading about Starlink since I first heard of it.

I got my invite and signed up. I'm on Gen5 Hughesnet now. Good days I can get over 30mps but sometimes it will drop down to 1.5, I don't even try to upload anything. Called tech support several times and they don't seem to be able to do anything.

Signed up like the rest. No more data caps soon! I’m east of Atlanta.

I’d be happy with 20Mbps
