Starlink

Lots of fiber got run up here. Right down the rural road that I live off of, though I can't tap off of it! The school just around the bend has a connection though.
A few years back I paid near 15k to get fiber to the WA property...

No cell service or antenna TV so DSL was the only option until it wasn't.

I see Starlink is now available at Home Depot

Cost was $500+ in 2021. Today's pricing is great.
And back when the gen 2 disheys came out they were still loosing money on each one at $500. I assume the gen 3s were designed to be cheaper & with economies of scale they are probably making money at the cheaper price.

When 3G was still a thing I could get 1, maybe 2 bars (roaming) and that was with an antenna on the roof and booster. But when 3G was mothballed and 5G replaced it the range to the nearest tower wiped out any signal reception.

I am very grateful for the StarLink service. If covers anything needed including streaming. And the safety factor if we had a serious a injury makes the monthly fee a non-issue.

I am grateful for StarLink after hurricane Helene passed nearby a month ago. I lost power for 3 days and much of South Georgia lost landline phone AND cell service also for 2 days. (Someone cut the main fiber cable serving S GA clearing debris,, in two places! Apparently once wasn’t sufficient 😖)
With the aid of a portable generator and 48v to 110v inverter in my electric golf cart I was able to have StarLink internet and WiFi cell service.

Sorry that things are so destroyed. It was a big event.

I love can do stories. Nice job!

All the best,

I wonder if the Starlink dish was able to withstand the high winds of hurricane Helene?

I know of a couple folks who had no issues, but orientation, and not being hit by debris has a lot to do with it.

The specifications vary by antenna generation and model, with the current gen 3 rated at 65+mph, and the comparable high performance dish rated at 174mph.

Wind driven rain is hard on electronics, and gusts are hard on mounts, so, to me, "withstanding" is always about what is the weakest link.

Alignment or re-alignment is so simple!
My Kit came with a QR code that I downloaded the app to my phone.
Using my phone I checked the location for obstructions and there are alignment instructions.
On my phone there is a rectangular picture frame and it shows the dish. I just had to move the dish to fit into the picture frame. I mounted the Starlink Dish on the DISH Network mount. Once the dish was in the picture frame it told me it needed to be tilted. I just adjusted the pole until it said it was correct.
I am very happy with the system and I hope this helps others thinking about getting Starlink. I have NO connection to them, just satisfied.

Our notification on fiber was about 8 months before we bought Starlink LOL

You have the federal government to thank for fiber in rural areas. Grant money to telecommunications companies to run fiber in rural areas. My wife is in that industry and it's very interesting.

It cost me 14k to run fiber the place in Washington…

Now I here folks are getting it at no charge.

County required mine to go underground… are you guys underground?

While that is an "ouch", I would thankful that it was so cheap, the quote that I got here was more than the house is worth, and some or all of it would have to be underground in the roadway, so especially pricey.

I fought maybe 7 years… got no where.

My brothers company was doing a 600 home subdivision in the next county and in the utility planning stage.

Comcast wanted exclusive and my brother said not so sure that’s a good move and then explained how I had been trying for years to get connected because near impossible to rent without internet and TV

The deal was $330 per month for 5 years with service so I figured about 14k for the install.

Crew did a fantastic job and said they enjoyed the country setting because almost all their work is city center underground with state routes, etc.

Ironic because the first 3 years I rented to a Mormon family that unplugged it saying they don’t watch TV or use Internet!

the same company has recently hooked up a few neighboring areas near my property. i contacted them about 2 months ago and their construction manager got back to me. he had me email them a map of out 5 phase subdivision. they have agreed to start towards the end of the year. he said he might be able to start sooner, but needs to get right of ways established on the private roads first. since the minimum property out here is 5 acres, alot of them are 10-20 acre plots. i have 30 myself. so the properties are spaced quite a ways apart. im actually surprised that there going to install.....surprised by real happy.

im super happy. ive been working with this company for quite awhile trying to get our location on their radar. a year ago i gave them a letter on business letterhead for their application package for govt funding.

i just signed a service agreement with them......but install will still be late fall. their working on the underground behind my property on the highway . their widening the road and adding turn lanes. that has to be completed first. since there has been no real winter this year, we wont have to stop work until ground thaws, and there wont be road restrictions inplace because roads have not frozen.

We keep getting taxed for expanding rural Internet but I doubt I will ever see it. Just more bonus money for the overpaid executives.

Same here. Lots of talk but no action. No fiber has been installed in my area at all yet on the news they talk about the millions of dollars spent in Nevada for "rural broadband" access.
