Good point Moss I thought the cylinder came with it. But as far as needing to rotate it 180 to manually split logs? In using mine I have yet to see the need or want to do this. With a little practice you can really maneuver and pin point exactly where you need the piece to be split. The way the PT moves the attachments left or right with the steering really works great with the splitter. I thank that splitting wood with the splitter up right is just an old concept we must try to delete from our mines. (That last statements applies for PT owners only or at least ones with machines that operate like a PT.) P.S. Just my opinion. Happy splitting.

Ps. Ps. Scot at Power Trac said that the quick attach hydraulics operated at about 3 gpm and didn’t even have its own pump.

That is correct. On our PT425 there are three pumps. The first is the variable volume pump that provides the power to the wheels.

The second is really one pump with two sections(I think), but I like to think of it as two seperate pumps.

The first section provides the power to the main PTO at 8GPM. It is always pumping fluid, but just circulates it back through the tank until the electric switch on the dash is engaged. Then it directs it out the port on the FEL arms, through any implement, and back to the tank through the other port on the FEL arms.

The second section of the pump provides the power to all of the hydraulic cylinders in the steering and FEL circuits. If you look at the valve that is under the joystick, it has three sections. Two are operated by the joystick and the third section is operated by the knee lever. This is the one that will flow about 3GPM, but it will still provide 2500PSI. So, it should do just as good a job at splitting logs, although it will be much slower than using the main PTO circuit at 8GPM.

The reason I would want to split manually is that sometimes I would want very small pieces for certain members of my family that think they need very small pieces because that's the way their father did it, and so on. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Personally, I want a wood burner that can take the largest pieces as possible so that I have less to split. I'm thinking of researching those outdoor wood burners that heat water and send it to the building(s). They have one model called the Pallet Burner and the doors are big enough to toss in whole pallets. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Thanks Moss. I guess you will need to figure out how to mount the controls so you can move them back and forth form the tractor position to the manual upright position. As to the rotating it 180 I thought of doing this when I was contemplating my design. Building an attachment plate that looked like the this (see attachment)

Sorry pequeajim, we kinda got away from the subject. I really would like to know how the welding class is comming. In the past i have been to a few of them. I found that starting out they were more of a grinding class than a welding one. By now you many know what i am talking about. Good luck and let us know how the projects are comming.

Thanks Stray, no problem. I'm just listening to some of the cool ideas. I want to start small. I think I might be able to do two small projects in the class.

1. Square receiver attachment plate for mounting a tow ball, disc cutter, lift bar and maybe a few other do dads..

2. A Removable thumb attachment for my mini hoe.

I could have used that thumb for the mini hoe last night. I was removing some large cuts of wood from my s10 pick up. As it was I had to drag them out with the hoe then switch to the grapple bucket to put them in a pile. When you get your design done please send some detailed pictures. Good luck with the welding and let us know how many times you stick the rod. LOL To this day as much welding as I have done I still do that with 7018. It’s really aggravating but don’t let it get to you.

I will post the pics when I come up with a design. This weekend, we are going to be doing some vertical welding and joints. I see that as a precursor to what I want to do.

I will probably come up with a drawing in AutoCAD, (which I would be happy to share), and fab it from that.

I have a few weeks before I am ready to start on it.

There were a few posts on here about building a thumb. I'll have to look around for some ideas. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Designing it yourself will be fun. You may want to take a look at Sedgewood's which is somewhere in the archives. You may want to ping him, as well, to see if there is something that was in his design which broke his mini hoe boom. His was on his 1845, but if it was hydraulic force that broke it, the 425s have a prodigious supply of that, too. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Check out this weld up kit from CDP backhoe.

It is a fold up unit.
