I think I'm going to need to have my starter rebuilt again.

It did this same thing a couple of years ago... It moves real slow like the battery is dead. I've charged the battery, installed a different battery, tried to jump start it, cleaned all the cables including the ground, and still had no luck.

When this happened before I had the starter rebuilt and all was well again.

It just gripes me that I have to do this again.

Check where the starter mounts to the block. DOUBLE check the cables.. both negative and positive.

2ys on a starter ain't good or normal.

I have seen corrosion "wick" up a cable. Even though the connection is clean, the corroded cable can still cause a problem. I put all new cables on my 4320 and it is like a new tractor now.
Also, I remember an old Pete we had years ago the ?Bendix? was bent ever so slightly. You could spin it on a test bench and it worked fine, but put a load on it (like starting an big cam 400 Cummins) and it would ground out.

I jumpered straight to the starter and to a solid ground on the chassis using jumper cables to test that very thing. Same result.

I gave the starter to a buddy at work whose step dad runs a motor rebuild shop. He got back with me yesterday to tell me the rear bearing was shot. That's probably the only thing the other guy didn't replace when he did it 2 years ago.

Total bill: $28. Sure beats $600 for a new starter.

I should have it back today, in tonight, and I'll be burning diesel tomorrow morning.

I installed the starter Friday night.

Wow! I'm beginning to wonder if that rear bearing had been going bad since before I got the tractor. I never remember the starter spinning the engine this fast before. Even after the previous rebuild.
