Starter

Allen listed what I think is the direct replacement. There is also another Hitachi starter with 15 teeth shown for Yanmar YM's and 2Q's. (2Q's are the 1970's sailboat engines that use the same engine block as YM1700 - YM2000). I think that model starter includes a reduction gear like a Chrysler starter and some of them are made by Nippon Denso.

To see one of these other starters go to
http://www.aea.com.au/shopping/index.html?target=Starter_UnitsHitachi.html
and search down the page to find
ASHI9050 Hitachi Starter
The one shown on that page is more powerful than the direct-drive standard Yanmar starter, 2KW instead of 1.3KW.

I think that was what was used for a replacement on mine - see my attached photo. It works fine on my YM240 (YM2000 equivalent).

I'm not certain about any of this - I simply offer it to help identify a broader range of parts that might possibly interchange.

More info on that alternate starter that fit my tractor, and should fit several YM's:

Yanmar's number for that starter is
121120-77010
and the nameplate on the starter shows
Denso
02800-5730

Putting 121120-77010 into Google leads to:
Electrical System Specialists
which shows a clear picture, and about 60 starter numbers that this can replace.

Google also returns
http://www.densoheavyduty.com/products/cross_alt.php
And scrolling down Denso's 'search' to 121120-77010 (but not 121120-77010 - Yanmar)
shows that the starter was used on ThermoKing refrigeration units (on semitrailers) as well as on Yanmar tractors.

So a ThermoKing salvage yard or dealer might be another source.

why in the world don't you take the thing off and carry it to a starter rebuild shop. Around here I get the rebuilt all time for $100. It only takes two bolts and three wires and you got it off.

I may do just that Joe. I haven't got it off yet as I have the daughter and her husband here visiting for the week and they will leave Saturday, and then I probably will check the only shop that rebuilds around here. That is one of the bad things about living in a small town, but it has a lot of good points too.

pruntyc,

I have a 1700 and I know that my starter is a Hitachi. Do not know the model number, but I will look after work today and let you know.

Well, I finally got a starter on my YM 1700. I took the old one into the re-builder, and he said the gear caught on the flywheel and burnt up everything in there, and that he had tried all over, and couldn't find the parts to repair it. So I looked on the web and found a new one, from DB Electrical, for less money than Napa wanted for a rebuilt one. I think its a Hitachi, but it doesn't have a name on it. But it works great.
