Starting problem

Hi all,

Borrowed a Ford 1700 diesel tractor from my elderly uncle. Started great the first time, but now since shutting it off I can't start it again. Has fuel, haven't run it anywhere near dry. I was told about a glow plug has to come on then go off before starting. Seems the minute I start cranking the light goes off and doesn't come back for hours. Any suggestions? Strawberries are coming today and need to till one more time before planting. Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Not familiar with the 1700, and can't say why the glow plug light isn't coming back on - but... try putting a wire direct from the battery to the glow plugs (located ontop of the cylinder head, normally a common rail between the cylinders with a wire at one end). Hold the wire into the battery + terminal for 15-20 seconds then try starting...

Not ideal I know, but may allow you to get those strawberries planted

does the engine crank over with the key?

did you remember to push the fuel stop in?

is it making smoke when cranking?

what color?

black? grey / white?

On the 1700 you have to turn the key to the left to activate the glow plugs. The glow plug indicator is a piece of resistance wire (in the dash), not a light. This time of year I don't use glow plugs much to start. Throttle opened? Fuel lever pointing down?
