Since we don't know what the OP's deposit was, this is obviously fruitless.

.... It is a nice double-axle trailer loaded with 2x12 and 2x6 form boards, plus a large box of stakes. The tags on the trailer expired August 2010.

Seems the OP, as Soundguy mentioned, has already said it's a nice trailer and more than worth his deposit, so it's worth pursuing ownership, and it sounds like he is proceeding in the most reasonable way.

Jake - You're coming across like the stereotype that many New Jersey'ites have been unfairly saddled with. The OP already has an attorney involved. While he was originally asking for opinions here, he has made his decision on the action he will take... case closed.

I agree, NSB, My point was that if the deposit was less than the value of a trailer with form boards on it, I don't think a lawyer is in order, and that the OP ought to just proceed with his building and wait on the legal actions because that'll just eat up $'s.

Well, as has been pointed out, in his initial post, the OP said

As such, the OP has ALREADY calculated that the value of the trailer and forms is greater than however much his deposit was and your point is moot.

That is not what you said in the post that I was responding to. You said:

In his first post, the OP said that he has judged the value of the trailer and boards to be greater than his deposit, so according to your reasoning, a lawyer is in order.
However, this may be able to be handled in small claims court with no lawyer needed and low ($200ish?) fees, or under the Nebraska law that "allows abandoned vehicles to be claimed after a certain time period".
