steering ajustment

Sorry to hear of the problems but when you mentioned clicking sound It reminded me of another gearbox on another tractor. The parts for mine were quite a bit cheaper.:(:(

Now off on another tangent; these gear boxes just may be replaceable from one from an older car or truck from the wreckers. Maybe consider looking into this route and do just a little refitting to make things work.:confused:

Well heres the latest on my steering problem. Got the steering box off the tractor and on the bench after a few hours of aggravation. After smashing my thumb nail and several cuss words im ready to take it apart. Tore it apart and cleaned things, and commenced inspection. The bearings are bad, of which a few were broken. Further investigation showed the steering shaft the bearings ride on is eating into. Looked in the parts schematics and all they show is the steering tube assembly, not just the shaft that goes thru the tube. I called messicks for a price and was told $500.00 plus for the tube assembly. Talk about sticker shock!!!!!!!!! Im still speechless,,,,,,,bedway

bearing surface on the wormshaft bad? a good machinist can build it up and turn it down.. or you can sleave it with a speedi sleave.. depending on the build of the shaft.. etc.

all's not lost yet!

Just by chance i called a kubota dealer near me and asked about a steering shaft. To my surprise they said they could order it and it would be $175.00, which sure beats the $535.00 other places were quoting for the tube assembly. I was skepticle but told them to order it. I went in last week to pick it up, taking my old one with me. Sure enough the new one was 1 1/8 inch longer than the one i took out. Strictly by eye, other than length, they looked identicle. I made a deal with parts department to buy it but if i couldnt make it work, they would take it back. After some time of comparing all the dimensions i decieded shortening the new shaft would work. I removed 1 1/8" and welded the shaft back together. I reassembled the steering box and it felt smooth and worked fine. After putting the tractor back together, and a test drive, everything works great. Thanks a bunch for your input guys. I know i saved myself several hundred dollars, and i also know how kubota steering boxes work now!

Kinda makes ya wonder why they couldn't get ya the right part though??

having to fix a new part seems kinda wrong!

glad you got it back together.

I recall a Farmall A I owned once (twice, actually). The previous owner had cracked the steering box by yanking the tractor with a chain around the box. He'd made it impossible to get apart as a result. That steering shaft would move in and out probably 2". Needless to say the steering wasn't that accurate. OK if you planned ahead and didn't hit a rock...

Those boxes must not have been real robust.. I can't tell you how manu I've seen welded back together from a crack right downt he middle.. thing is.. they probbaly could be welded up pretty good.. or even brazed.. and would hold oil if you did it right.. most peopl ejust cracker boxed them toghether full, and then greased them.

( I'm not against grease in a steering box.. just the bad fix itself. etc.. )
