Stieger was one of the first commercially successful high horsepower 4wd's. They used "off-the-shelf" components in the drivetrain to simplify production and hold down cost. (components for over-the-road trucks, off-road trucks, and construction equipment) The "assembled components" construction concept made them a breeze to work on. At different points through their history, Stieger built 4wds for several "big names" like Ford, IH, and others. Case/IH (now Case New Holland) bought Stieger. You'll find the STIEGER nameplate still on todays Case/New Holland 4WDs

One of the most amazing feats of power I have ever witnessed was watching a Steiger tractor pull a 24 bottom plow at the farm show when I was a teenager. Just absolutely awesome.:D :D

Steigers are a sweet machine. I have logged 100's of hours in them. They were by far, my favorite big 4x4 tractor to operate.

The Case/IH Quadratrack (Steiger) is totaly awesome!!

The ST470 Steiger is a BIG tractor. Steiger used the huge KTA-1150 Cummins engine for this machine. That engine in the ST470 was only rated at 470 horsepower...I say only because that engine was sold in other applications at 600-hp. The seller says the tractor is 525-hp and the engines may have been upgraded to the 525-hp at an overhaul. 525-hp was a very common rating for the Cummins KTA.

Actually Versatile was the first to hit the market with Lego build style tractors. JD tried it with the Wagner tractors but failed. Later they tried it again with the 7020 series, based on the 5000 (??) series wheeled tractors to use common engines and rear ends, which had more succes in the market.

I'm not finding much on the "start-up date" of Versatile, not even in Nebraska test results. The first Wagners were built in 1957. It was 7 years later when Deere started selling re-badged Wagners. Before Deere took on the Wagner line, they built their own 4wd, the 8010/8020. They weren't very successful. When the 7020 and 7520 made the scene, the market was primed for the giant 4wds. The first 8010 was shown to the public in the fall of 1959 at a show in Marshalltown Iowa. Steiger Brothers were farmers from Fargo North Dakota. They built their first "component built" tractor in 1957. IH introduced their first attemt at big 4wd power in 1961. It was a re-hash of components from their large 4wd construction equipment for the most part.

According to the Versatile web site I found the first prototype was built in 1965 and production was started in 1966.

I didn't know Steiger and Versatile ever had anything to do with each other?? Are you sure the date is not the production of the first Versatile 4wd tractor?

But if you want big, then look at the Bigbud. The largest they made was 747 HP. They only made a few tractors.

I FINALLY found the origin of Versitile's 4wd tractor production. (from "Farm Tractors 1950-1975" . written by Lester Larson, Head of Testing for University of Nebraska, and verified by American Society of Agricultural Engineers) The Versitile D-100, their very first tractor, was produced in 1966, making them actually one of the LAST of the majors to get into "component-built" 4wds. Steiger lays claim to being the first to employ that design technique in 1957.

Two Steigers in eastern Colorado. One had a 60-foot harrow and the other had the 60-foot wide seed drill.

My neighbor uses a Steiger to farm about 600 acres of hay crop. Impressive machine.

Went to an auction outside Willows, CA last Feb.

A 1981 Steiger Panther III ST-310 (310 hp engine) went for $14500.
A 1973 Versatile 800 (235 hp pto) went for $3750 (noise in the rear end).
A 1975 JD8630 (275 hp engine) went for $8500.

while i was out at work the other day came across this steiger cougar2 by a local dairy farm. looks like it had about an 18ft harrow behind it. i think it also doubles as their silage bunker packing machine as it had some cylinders up front for a blade attachment.

That looks more like a 24 to 26 foot disc to me. Pretty common in the part of the country I grew up. Lots of older Stiegers and Versatile tractors still pulling in fields.

The versatile line was promoted as an economy line especially when steiger started working with powershifts. They were a bit noiser in the cab as the muffler was right by the cab.
I do believe it is just a re-rated engine.
