I had a 2019 Ram 1500 and now have a 2021 Ram 1500, both hemi engines. When I bought the 2019, I thought to myself - in five years, the V8 will probably be gone. may be getting closer.

If it makes the power they say, it could be a good replacement for the Hemi. It has what I call “spray on” cylinder liners, which Ford had some problems with on their 5.0 V8’s.

You mean Nickasil liners and it was GM, not Ford that had issues in their Vega's. Lots of them burned more oil than gas.

Knowing Stellantis (Pugeot) like I do, I bet they will too.

Don't really matter since pump gas will be 10 bucks a gallon by then.

Ford has had problems with them recently, starting in 2018 with the liners. It appears they corrected the problem but the first year was painful for some. It’s called Plasma Wire Arc Transfer Process.

Well I will be impressed if it is 1/3 as reliable as "AMC's" straight six that Chrysler used for years in some of the Grand Cherokees and Wranglers.

Although a long six they are bullet proof.
My offroad buggy uses a HO 4.0L six out of a Cherokee. 272K miles never had the valve cover off. In the rev limiter at least once every time it's used.

Horsepower always needs fuel so it will be interesting what EPA rating and real mileage will end up to be. I see the lower HP engine recommends 91 octane and the HO requires it so that will cost more. Just the way more HP in a small package needs to be fed. I would assume it is a lighter package though.

I think I heard that the old AMC 6 cyl like I use weighs the same as a small block chevy V8. The new engines are extremely light in comparison.

It sounds like these Hurricane engines are closely related to the turbo 2.0L that has the same bore/stroke/ and cyl spacing.

Grandaughter inherited her dads 94 Grande Cherokee 4.0.
I think it is just about to roll over 300000.

Nickasil to me.
Bout the only thing that is the same is they a re both platings.

The material and the process are both different.

Bout like thinking forged aluminum and cast iron are the same thing

I believe the 4.0L I6 weighed somewhere north of 700 pounds. I researched that before I pulled one from a TJ that I parted out

Not sure it all matters once gas hits 10 bucks a gallon. :p Why I'm riding my motorcycle soon as the weather breaks. My 650 carbureted KLR gets 70 mpg and if I baby it, it gets almost 90 mpg.

Really, I wound have never thunk that. Both are very thin coatings and both are subject to degradation from impact and scoring.

The Japanese have successfully used Nickasil coatings for years. GM tried it and failed because the internal tolerances of their engines as well as the piston skirts are't compatible with it and knowing the schlock quality level of Stellantis in general (same as their predecessor), I can predict with almost certainty that their attempt to use a plasma sprayed on coating will result in failure down the road. We will see. Just like the soft cams in the hemi engines. Poor QC.

None of the automakers today are really concerned with making a quality product. Their main concern is the profit made per unit.

It's been used since the '70s in two stroke motorcycle cylinders. Kawasaki was the first and may have developed it. It works very well and wears slower than iron. It's also lighter than iron sleeves in an aluminum block, allows closer bore spacing, and conducts heat better.

While the sound of a v8 is addictive, the huge low end torque of a modern turbo motor is a lot of fun.
