Steriod shot in knee, ???

This sums it up. Under the “standard” protocol for your knee they would start with the least invasive like oral meds, then injections like steroids or some of the modern “lubricants”. Then ultimately the knife. It’s worth a try to have an injection.

I’d also try an oral NSAID or better yet Turmeric with Black Pepper in pill form. Both are anti inflammatory- Turmeric being the wholistic option.

Arthritis can also be triggered by foods and some forms are triggered by uric acid. Talk to the doc about some of these options to help delay going under the knife.

 . . .

OLDPATH - I have degeneration of the cartilage in my left shoulder. Starting at the age of about 30 I've had cortisone shots in my shoulder. It definitely eliminates the pain. The Dr's say the shot will last for around three years.

Whatever - over the 45 years since the first shot - I've had an additional shot about once every ten years. Definitely better than any operation. I would certainly recommend a cortisone shot and see if it helps. You have nothing to loose.

It's quite obvious - in my situation. The cortisone shot eliminates the pain & inflammation and allows the situation to heal. It's not a permanent fix but one shot every ten years is not a bad deal at all.

I have a slightly torn meniscus from a skiing accident 30+ yrs ago (OK, OK...a stupid stunt I did while skiing in college :D) It bothered me for years, then subsided for years until the past few years building my house. This knee gets swollen and stiff from too much kneeling and ladder work. Well building a house is nothing but that... Went to an ortho ~4 yrs ago and she pulled out some fluid from the joint and gave me a cortisone shot after an xray showing nothing serious. After a couple weeks, it has been great since, though it is starting to bug me the past few days again as I have started on finishing the stairs from the temporary state they have been in for a while now (heavy kneeling). I will see how it progresses but may need another fluid draw and shot this summer/fall.

But if your arthritis is bone degeneration, I am skeptical that it would work. If it is just irritation of the joint, then you have a good shot. In either case, it is fast and pretty cheap to do, so I'd give it "a shot" yuk yuk :D Worst case in 2-4 weeks you have determined that it won't work and can move on to the next stage. Best case, you are happy for some years to come.

Thanks for the advice. Is there a age limit when they won't do surgery? That is the last thing I want. I am 78 and still work hard every day and on my feet. The injury is on my dominant leg. I thought I might have injured it by putting all my weight on it when getting out of my big truck several times a day. Every time I use the stairs or climb a ladder or get up from off the ground, that is the leg I use. I remember about a year ago I had graded my drive way and was walking it and kicked some loose stone with my leg sideways and remember hurting it then, along with just jumping out of my truck, getting on and off my dozer. VA is suppose to call me next week and set up a appointment to have it done. Like some one said on here "why cant they just add a grease zeerk".

I went through the injections and all that waste of time, and eventually had the knee replaced, also my dominate (right) leg) 9 years ago. I'm glad I got it done, but now I'm 79 years old, and I would not do it again. Fairly long recovery and physical therapy, and you MUST do the physical therapy or you wind up with a non-flexible knee.

I have had EXACTLY the same result with shoulder cortisone use.
Very beneficial, and long lasting.
I am 78.

Took a shot 2 months ago.

Before the shot, I was hobling just a wee bit that you could notice.

After the shot, walked fine.

This morning, went out on a 50 minute walk with the misses and dog. No problems other than it was pretty humid for 0800 in the morning.

My shot was a cortisone shot. Everyone reacts differently from what I'm told.

Best guess is I have arthritis in the one knee, because it's not near as bad as what shows up on x-rays per my shoulder.

I'd take the basic shot of whatever the doc reccomends, and see what it does. Inevitably, you're only buying time.

I was told 5 years ago my shoulder needed to be replaced, but I can deal with it. The issue is, on the shoulder, the replacement is only good for 15 years. I don't feel like having to get a second replacement done at around 70, added the doctor told me I'd be a horrible canidate because I can still deal with the pain now.

Last year at this time I hurt my shoulder with some repetitive motion that involved lifting 30-40 pounds. Twas on vacation so it was not much fun. The shoulder slowing healed but after six months it was not improving so I went to the doctor. The Xrays showed no damage but just inflammation so the PA gave me two choices. I could take 800mg of Ibuprofen for a MONTH or I could take a shot. Since there was no way I was taking 800mg every day for month, I took the shot. Also figured I could always take the Ibuprofen if the shot did not work, but if I took the meds and they did not work, I would have to return for the shot.

Soooo, I took the shot which worked.:cool2: For about 4-6 weeks.:( So I took 400-600mg of Ibuprofen four days a week. That helped but I was not really getting better. Somehow I heard about Turmeric and bought this, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0100US7HW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I just picked that supplement and tried it. It sure is expensive for a bunch of cheap spices in a pill but I am paying for convenience. One could take far more of the spice in a glass of water for far less money.

Anywho, the stuff works. :confused3::shocked: My should is much better, not 100% but I am not sure it will ever be 100%. I take two of the "pills" a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. I take a bunch of supplements and I just added these to the mix. If I have more discomfort than usual, I just take an extra pill or two. I don't have to worry about what the "pill" is doing to my liver like I would with Ibuprofen. The stuff works for us. We are giving it to the kids when the complain of a headache or some other ache or pain.

A cooking show came on TV last weekend and they had a guest chef on the program. He was Indian and was showing how to cook some Indian dishes. He mentioned that Turmeric was an anti inflammatory AND an antibiotic.

I have not heard of black pepper being and anti inflammatory but it sure does spot bleeding. Learned that somewhere and used it one night when the wifey cut herself pretty bad. Added some pepper to the wound and the bleeding stopped.

Later,
Dan

I have had two cortisone shots in my L5/6 vertebrae and one in my left shoulder. The first shot in the back lasted about 6 weeks, the second one not so much. The one in my shoulder did nothing for the pain (I have an 8mm tear in the tendon according to the MRI) and it hurts like **** to move my arm above head height. Doctor says to just grin and bear it and dont use that arm so much.
The xrays show major arthritis in just about all my joints and back vertebrae have no cartilage just bone on bone which causes the pain and stiffness. Hip joints are worn out also as well as my knees. DO they do body replacements? Getting old is bad news.

If any of you guys are still young, take care of your bodies and dont overdo it with lifting or other hard work like I did. I am also not a believer of running for exercise, that just wears out the joints faster. Do some other exercise that is not so much pounding of the joints.
