I'm under the impression the 10,000 lb. rated straps have at least a 4,700 lb. WLL, but I could be mistaken. I know that 5,000 lb. rated straps have a WLL of 3,300 lbs. If the percentage holds true, then the 10,000 lb. rated straps would have a 6,600 lb. WLL.

Gary, You may be right, I'm just going by the Northern catalog. In there the 10,000lbs. straps have a working load limit of 3300lbs. But It could just be the brand that they sell has that rating. Yours may be way different. But I still like my shiny chains, and new binders!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I like to weld the tractor to the trailer, then encase the entire loaded trailer in concrete. It is a very secure setup, with the benefit of no frayed straps or rusty broken chains.

Seriously-I have always kind of wondered something about securing a load on a trailer. Maybe this is a dumb question, but is a chain (or strap) double in strength if it is looped around the loaded object and tied back at its starting point? Does that method have more tensile strength than one strand of tie down attached end to end?

Yup,

According to my Mechanical engineering Handbook, Force = Weight/number of ropes. two ropes gives 1/2X force or for a given force (strength of rope) 2 ropes = 2X Weight.

If you remember back to physics class, and do a free body diagram, the answer becomes more clear. You can have force F in each rope, if two ropes are going from the load to the tiedown point, then you just doubled your load capacity.
