hey guys, i got a rebuild kit the other day for my old ferguson to30 and when i opened it there was some string in the box. is this supposed to be some sort of gasket or what. i can't find the application anywhere in the manual. thanks for the help.

Are we talking about a motor rebuild kit...if so the only thing I can imagine is that the rear main kind of looks like string (if you hold you tounge right), more like a shoe lace

Ditto. I've never been into a fergy.. but ford uses rope seals as mains... though i think they mostly leak or drip a little.. even if installed correctly. Luckilly napa can cross the ford rope seal over to a modern neophrene one.. Perhaps the fergy one can be crossed as well?

Could it be the pull string for pulling the upper rear main seal thru on a partial rebuild? I mean that is just a guess but it used to be a trick the old timers did to replace leaky rear mains without a complete tare down.

Could very well be. Especially if it is a hollow braid.
