String Trimmer for your Tractor???

What's needed is an off set MMM that sticks out further on one side of the tractor than it does on the other side?

Another thing that would be nice is a true off set tow behind mower.

The Swisher mowers (for ATVs) have a tongue that lets you mow at an offset. The idea is you can mow down a bank or stream area without riding there. But most people I've heard from don't like it because its hard on your neck -- i.e. you have to watch it all the time. They prefer one to just follow in there tracks so there's no question of where it is.

Power Trac has a boom mower for $1700.
It's a much better out fit for the money.
For more versatile than the weed chopper.
To bad Power Trac don't make an adapter kit for it to fit other tractors.
If they did they could sell a bunch of their boom mowers to other tractor owners.
A boom mower for the price of a MMM is not bad. Not bad at all!

1*The trouble with an off set is it's worthless for trimming along ditches.
You can only get the wheels of a tractor, tow behind mower or off set mower so close to the edge of the ditch.
The only thing the off set accomplishes is it moves the tractor further away from the ditch but it still leaves the same uncut weeds along the ditch that the tractor mmm leaves.
2*But you can't tow it or any pull behind mower up through the bottom of a ditch to trim it.
3*
4*Why tow a mower up the same path you just mowed with the MMM , why do you need that thing back there going over what you have already mowed. No question where it's at, it's in the wrong place.

LBrown59,

Your reply to me that an offset MMM is needed makes no sense. MMMs already stick out from each side of the tractor. The problem is that the housing overextends (for obvious safety reasons) the blades and thus the MMM cannot trim right along the edges of walls, trees, rocks, etc. One of the reasons people react to you as they do is that you dig up old threads and then reply to eight or nine posts in a row. The things you write are not stylistically well written and the information you state is full of errors and misconceptions.

Now, I must give you credit for this last post above, because one of the links you gave was to an old thread. That thread does have a series of posts by JN4310 with attachments showing his ingenious self built string trimmer which mounts to the side of the mower deck on his JD garden tractor and is belt powered from the pully style PTO normally used to drive the mower. I am extremely impressed with this. I wish Kubota would offer a design similar to this to be mid-mounted on a BX and driven by the mid-belly PTO. Here are links to all the attachments JN4310 posted:

Before I bought my Swisher Postmaster I considered a couple of other units, including the fence mower and the fencehog http://www.fencehog.com/. The other fence mowers cost quite a bit more than the Postmaster. As I recall, the other units cost somewhere between $1,295 and $1,595 (maybe more). That's about 2.5 to 3 times as much as the Postmaster, which cost me about $500. Also, the fence mower and fencehog both use steel blades, but the Postmaster uses very heavy nylon cords. Important when mowing over rocky ground and blade tips are whirling at 19,000 rpm.

The problem I'm running into with the Fencehog , Fencemower and the Swisher Postmaster is they all 3 have to short of a reach to trim along my ditches that are anywhere from 2 to 5 feet wide.
If only they would have mounted the units on an adjustable telescoping arm instead of on a fixed point.

A rear mounted 3 point mower or brushhog would probably work but I would have to keep pulling ahead and backing it out over the ditch.
I need the mowing device sticking out the side not the back so that I can simply drive along the ditch and trim it.

LB, have you thought about a sickle bar mower? There are offset mowers made but I don't know if there is one for a compact. There are sickle bars for compacts. I saw a mid-mount on an old Wheel Horse last weekend.

Has anyone tried the string trimmer that mounts to the deck of a mid or front mount mower.

Lbrown59,
I have responded in the lawn & garden section, I do not want to double post. Please check out that section.
