Striped out Hydro Drain Plug

/ Striped out Hydro Drain Plug #21
No reason not to try a re-tap at the same size. I've had this work on a number of occasions including stripped out brake bleeders (on cars).
Friend of mine did a retap on his front brakes when he stripped them out in that old 50's Willys wagon. They would leak a bit and he would add some brake fluid and give the bleeders a slight turn. This went on for sometime and one day he had to hit the brakes HARD to avoid a wreck when a guy ran a light. One of the bleeders popped out completely the other almost did, he was able to steer around the red light runner but he had no brakes. The E brake saved him and he called me to help him get back home.

Take away: I would not retap a mission critical component that in the event of fail it can lead to catastrophic results, brake bleeders, oil drain plugs. for example. This is just the engineer in me that was taught many years ago PFA, Point of Failure Analysis.

Well, I purchased a set of used Brembo brakes for my 350z. Most of the bleeder screws were seized and stripped when I removed them. Several had to be re-tapped at a different size. At least one of them re-tapped at original size. Everything went back together just fine. Tested in the shop. Tested on country roads. No leaks. Since then it has been on the race track at least 5 times, hard braking from 140 mph over and over again. I can't say they will never fail but at this point don't think a failure is any more likely than any other set of Brembos this age. Brake failures do happen, even in newer, fully OEM cars. It can be catastrophic on the race track, obviously. Hope to get roll bars, seats and harnesses in the car in the near future.

That is OK, we think differently. I have worked with and on Mission Critical systems, where a failure results in catastrophic results, from loss of life to crippling loss of revenue. This how this engineer thinks and its how I do it; your car, your wallet, your choice...

offering up a thought that might be worth a try - my boat has a drain plug that you tighten by turning after inserting , its made of rubber or something similar they also use a larger version on semi filler tubes and i think with only fluid being the pressure on it it may work well .
