The other alternative is to split it now... but yeah. you do bring up good points.. if a bearing gets mad.. more damage could occur.
I think it's got to be up to the user to feel the situation out.... IE.. use his ears anyway. If I hear a squeal like a mad bearing.. then I'm gonna split it.. If it sounds like it will free up and get better.. then go with it.
Kind of a dice roll / brass gonad type of issue.. but i wouldn't fault anyone either way to split it or run it.. etc.
