Don't get in a hurry to pour a slab after removing the stumps, unless you have someone come in compact the soil and check density...Even with rebar I have seen cavern's open up under slab's that have not settled or been properly compacted a density checked..

Thank you I will make sure that I leave it through at least one winter deep freeze before pouring the slab.

You mean like what happened at the corvette museum. Expect that wasn't due to stumps that was just a big ole sinkhole opening up. That was one big hole.

Ok-- lessons learned in the last month on the oak stumps.

If you don't have a big enough tractor to dig a trench and push the whole tree over (thanks for idea Brandi but my little tires just spin) -- fell tree, bore into stump with chainsaw making a cut deep enough to get through most of the stump but just before hitting dirt (may want to have a few chains around to learn where that is.) Then use a wedge and pound it into the slot you just cut and pound on it until it splits your slot to the edges of the stump. repeat this across the face of stump until you have a bunch of 4-8" thick "slices" then use BH bucket teeth to split stump off layer by layer. Pictures to follow but with this method I only dulled 4 chains and removed 6 stumps and all this was done in an afternoon. Hey, it worked and I am moving on to final grade and grass seed.

Oledadger,
I almost lost to this stump. It was in my friend's backyard. It was right after Hurricane Rita and her yard had a water level of one foot down. It took a day to get it out. We even pressure washed it to cut a hole in one side to get a chain to hold. I kept rocking it every which way and we finally got it out. It was so muddy, my tractor had her tractor chained to it and we drug it to her burn pile. 9-27-08 One big Oak rootball.jpg
