Stupid Things I Have Done

I was dumping some old stump debris down a steep drop off, like i have a thousand times before, however its been several months since I was on that part of my property. It appears a large stump had rotted out where my front wheel stopped. My left front wheel went down about six inches in about one second, my bucket was over the drop off, I tried to save it like I have in the past many times with the bucket. The problem was even with the bucket down and curled down it was over the embankment too far to catch the ground and help me. Before I could back up, I was on the ground and the tractor was laying beside me. Its hard to tell from the picture, but the ground is higher on the right than left.
So glad you weren’t hurt!👍🏻

Recently happened so thread revival of this one, made an attempt to transfer from personal account to business account online they (were completely different credit unions) for some reason what i thought it was supposed to do did the opposite and tried to transfer from my business to personal. I was then bombarded with notifications of transfer being cancelled and insufficient funds. Fortunately an actual bank teller saw first hand my complete incompetence of using apps and online banking and refunded my fees. I then wrote a paper check for the transfer and all was fixed. 😂 Except for my stubborn unknowing ignorance.

Over the years my wife has driven me to the ER so many times. Here's a good one. I decided to put a Briggs motor on a bicycle. Top speed was about 65 mph...insane on a flimsy bicycle & no helmet. I had an ignition toggle switch for a "Jake brake".
First trial run I had the side cover off, started it, it was idling and I had a flat blade 6" shaft screwdriver I was going to adjust the carburetor with. BOOM! The screwdriver shaft hit the spinning flywheel fins which drove screwdriver into my right eye

.
I shut motor off & pulled screwdriver out. Closed my good eye and looked at the sun. I was blind except sun I could see what looked like a purple curtain. I went to house "well...I did it now!" I said to wife. She grabbed a towel, drove me 80 mph to hospital flashers on, me holding a bloody towel over eye.
X-ray showed screwdriver went into my brain. (That's what's wrong with me

) Doctors asked why I pulled it out? Just a reaction. All they could do was sew up the eyelid, sent me home with an eyepatch and pain meds. The screwdriver went through lid at top, rolling eyeball back.
Looking at it next day it was horrible, red and iris wasn't there. I went to a local eye center to be checked out and given drops of some sort. Then checking every few days the white part appeared, then after a few weeks something below which was the iris. Day by day the iris slowly moved around until finally it was back! Vision was blurry at first but cleared up! Back at the eye center they called me "the miracle guy". I'm 71, no cataracts and they said 20-20 vision. I do use reading glasses for close work, although I can read normal print ok.

This may quality—-

In March, we bought a winter place in Florida. Weather was great. No use of heater.

We went back to STL in March.

We come back to Florida in November. It got a little chilly. Wife turns on heat.

I’m outside and hear a/c unit running. Think - wife mistakenly turned on a/c vs heat. Go inside - nope the thermostat is on heat.

Can’t figure it out.

Call HVAC place and explain the issue. Guy says - do you have a heat pump? I say “I don’t know. I have what looks like a normal a/c unit outside and what looks like a normal furnace in the attic”.

He says to look at thermostat and see if there is an “emergency heat” setting. Sure enough it does.

He explains that on a heat pump the outside unit runs on a/c as well as heat.

I had no clue. Only had gas heat my entire home owning life.

I felt dumb.

I have a mini split really, like it's multi season usage especially for what they cost one of the main reasons i purchased it was it has a heat pump for fall and winter and ac in the summer.

Wow. That should be required viewing for forklift operators at warehouses!

Due to earthquake risks, there are extra reinforcement required for pallet racks in California, but I wouldn't take any bets that it couldn't happen here.

All the best,

Peter

At the newspaper we had to stack paper rolls on end, 4 high. Never a problem. The problem happened a couple times when the clamp truck operator was moving through low ceiling areas and clipped sprinkler pipes causing quick flooding. Yikes! You'd be amazed at the number and size of roaches that live in paper warehouses.

Having been in a newspaper plant, and a paper mill, no, I don't think I would be either...😱😉

Being a clamp operator always struck me as being much, much harder than it looks because of the weight/inertia of the rolls. Rather like trying to gently berth a large boat.

All the best,

Peter

A full roll is 4 pages wide.

We put one on it's end, then grab a second roll and place that on top of the first.

Then we'd turn a third roll on it's end, then grab a fourth roll and place that on top of the third.

Finally, we'd grab the third roll with the fourth balanced on top of it, and place the third roll on the second roll.

Four high.

3/4 rolls went 5 high.

Half rolls were a little more tricky, as they went 8 high.

Dinkies, which are single sheet in width, but are wrapped together like half rolls.

While the forklift operator triggered the catastrophe, this is really the fault of the warehouse planners and engineers. Of course a warehouse completely dedicated to picking and placing product on racks and mezzanines via forklift are going to take an occasional bump from a forklift operator, it is 100% inevitable. How could the racking be designed and installed so poorly that one little bump brings down the entire warehouse?

Years ago I bought a Clark propane forklift and a 6'5" 400# friend stopped by, asking for a ride. I lifted him fully up then wide open up & down driveway. It turned out OK but stupid looking back.

A small stupid thing I do with alarming frequency is, when I’m driving and have to move the sun visor around to block the sun, I’ll be careful to not push the garage door opener buttons so as to not accidentally open the garage door…..even though I may be a hundred miles away from the garage.
