Stupid Tractor Tricks

I've been debating trailers and ramps myself lately. Ramps with knees will only help if they are hinged, not merely slide ons. I originally thought I could get the stowable ramps and weld on the knees, but as soon as the tractor goes from the ramp to the trailer tail... same problem. I'm thinking I'll stick with stowable ramps and use wood blocks under the trailer tail.

I use a jack stand on my trailer. right in the center between the ramps. Stops the back of the truck from coming up. Just remember to leave some space so you can get it out once there is a load on the trailer.

OK I'll show my ignorance. What are ramps with knees and "scotched on"
I assume they are ramps with support at the high end, sort of a triangle. I'm shoppping for a trailer and the dealers try to talk me out of the trailers with the hinged ramps that have this support at the end of the trailer when the ramps are down, then want to charge me more foe these post that drop down to support the trailer end.
I got so confused about several options that I just decided to rent a trailer a few times and see what I really need.

Not too ignorant, mdbarb./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif I think you've got it pretty well figured out./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

RobS,
Have you consider a tilt trailer bed with a duck tail instead.
Duck tail what we call a trailer up here that has about 22 degree angle which pitches down at the end of the trailer.

I believe Breaver Trailers have something in this line.

Thomas, I've looked at all sorts of trailers but budget constraints will probably keep me in a fairly basic 18' beavertail (same as ducktail?) car hauler. I've seen some pretty slick tilt-beds, but they are pretty pricey.

Here are the promised, better late than never, pictures of the Stump of Gibralter. I also have pictures of one of the 36+ inch oak stumps as well as a print of the pile of timber I moved with the 4n1 bucket, if anyone is interested.

Enjoy.

Dan -

That's one stubborn-looking puppy, alright. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

For those of you who might have trouble viewing TIFF files, try the attached JPEG version.

Harv,

Thanks for the conversion to jpg. I could have sworn our scanner did jpg but it does not. I have not had any time to find a conversion program but eventually I'll get one. I posted the pics yesterday but then noticed someone had changed the defaults on the scanner so I deleted the posts. Big mess.

If the weather holds I'm going to have a stump digging weekend. Mainly little bitty things, 4-8 inches but a few 30-36 inch oak Big Boys. I'll be applying my Stump of Gibralter techniques to see if it goes faster/easier.

Thanks Again,
Dan

Dan,
By the looks of that root system you were a tad busy for a while, but at least you had good open space to work.

May the other stumps remove easier.

Do you know what happened? Looks like he was skiding, looking back, and drove into a big hole.

I'll bet he sure was proud of that roll cage, especially if he had a seat belt on.

Re: Stupid Tractor Tricks-flipped it

Bird,
I can't recall ever running one that had seat belts! All I've run have had the roll cage (except the old Cletrac), but no belts. Of course, the last one I was ever on, was a JD12 that I worked for several months.

Re: Stupid Tractor Tricks-flipped it

Scruffy, I've only operated one, and only for a very brief time, can't remember for sure but think it was a Case 580, and it didn't have a seat belt. Maybe none of them do; I just assumed the newer ones would have.

Re: Stupid Tractor Tricks-flipped it

Bird and Scruffy, The last company I worked for had a newer D9 that had seat belts. MSHA requires seat belts on all machinery operated in a mine setting, and can levy a hefty fine if they are not being used. I guess they could have been added on, but my guess is they come equiped.

Gordon, what size or model was it....?

Re: Stupid Tractor Tricks-flipped it

I'll bet that expanded metal feels really good on your face as you flop around inside that roll cage. Of course, you would prefer the pain to the total absence of feeling that having a track-loader on your back can cause. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

The S.O.G was somewhat in the open, well, after I "dozed" the slash out of the way it was open. I went after a bunch of stumps this past weekend and pulled 40-50. The average size was in the 6 inch range. But I did get out a 36 inch oak stump. 2.5 hours of work but I think I can get it under 1 hour as I figure out the root systems.

I went after the oak like it was the pine which I think was overkill. If the weather permits I'm going after the remaining 4 oaks that need to be removed next weekend. I'm thinking I can get them out by digging under them on one side and then moving the tractor forward a few feet to cut the remaing roots. Hopefully under an hour.

When I have a bit more time into this and really have the technique down I'll post my How To Remove Stumps in the Rural section.

I pulled quite a few 1-6 inch pine stumps with the 4n1 bucket as well. It was like pulling teeth! Thankfully not mine!

The power company is putting underground lines into my neighbor's house site this week. I had left a 60 foot section of pine saplings on the side of the road as a screen. But they have to come out for the power company. When I did this by hand I was lucky to do 150 feet of road per VERY hard and HOT work day. But also leaving the cutoff stumps in the road. With the tractor and the 4n1 FEL I did 60 feet in an hour. That was everything piled up and most stumps out of the ground. AND I did not work up a sweat! Course the tractor did not care either. Sure wish I had the 4700 last spring!

Later...
